(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in Fault-Ride-Through of Wind Power Plant with Grid Forming Control

The electricity system is undergoing a transformational generation technology shift from synchronous machine based thermal power plants to voltage-source-converter interfaced wind power plant (WPP). One consequence of this shift is that the future power system will have both a lower short circuit capacity (SCC) and lower synchronous inertia than it does today. A system with low SCC challenges the fault-ride-through (FRT) capability of a WPP, which can in term jeopardize the frequency stability of a low inertia system. The project aims to evaluate and identify this interplay between the FRT strategy of a WPP with grid-forming control and the grid frequency stability in low SCC and low synchronous inertia system, through theoretical analysis and experimental verification. The expected outcome includes an improved understanding on the potential interplay between the FRT strategy and the grid frequency stability, as well as an effective strategy to mitigate their undesirable interplay.

Deadline : 15 March 2022.

(07) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in sustainable antifouling strategies in shipping

According to studies delivered to the International Maritime Organization, ~10% of shipping’s energy consumption can be attributed to poor maintenance of underwater surfaces, which results in marine growth (biofouling) and hull/propeller surface roughness that increases ship resistance through water. Also, current antifouling coating practices, relying on biocidal coatings, emit significant amounts of heavy metals to sensitive sea areas, such as the Baltic Sea. By improving current practices, not only could operators achieve better economic results, but shipping impacts on climate, air quality and marine water quality could also be reduced.

The aim of the postdoc position is to further develop a decision-support tool (HullMASTER) to evaluate antifouling strategies for ships based on several sustainability criteria. HullMASTER was developed for the Baltic Sea region to allow a comparison between different hull maintenance strategies in terms of costs for operators, as well as to external costs due to environmental and human health degradation. The successful candidate will be responsible to expand the geographical scope of the tool to European scale.

(15) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in AI Engineering – Software Engineering for AI

This position concerns research that addresses the challenges of development of AI-enabled systems (i.e. systems that includes AI-based functions). The current trend today is to integrate AI functionality into complex systems, making AI functions as architectural components of these systems. In engineering of AI-enabled systems new challenges appear related to the AI components themselves and to development of AI-enabled systems that contain these components. For example, how do we efficiently build AI-enabled systems, when we cannot predict efficiency of ML training phase? Or, for a required system reliability, what quality of ML components is required? Or, how do we manage continuous change of software with a process of changes of ML components? Our research will focus on (i) providing a new development process that integrates the Machine Learning (ML) and software development processes, (ii) building component models for AI components that expose the information specific to AI components, such as the datasets used or the accuracy, and (iii), by analyzing system consistency using component and system properties and triggering information exchange between the software and ML development process, and providing a seamless continuous evolution of the software system.
