Postdoc summary/title: Post-doctoral fellowship NORCIE – Norwegian Centre for International Economics
As a post-doctoral fellow, you will be working on the NORCIE project alongside Professors Craig Parsons and Bent Sofus Tranøy at ARENA, as well as partners in the project at the Department of Economics, UiO, the Chr. Michelsen Institute (CMI), and the Peace Research Institute Oslo. You will be expected to both assist with research tasks designed by the project leaders and to develop and implement your own research in related areas. The position is announced within the overall thematic focus of the NORCIE project, with a particular emphasis on NORCIE’s research regarding the evolving EU economic order. Given NORCIE’s mission to inform Norwegian policy discussions, it is desirable that candidates have an interest in issues of relevance to Norway.
The selected candidate should have research experience and interests that connect to some of the ARENA-led components of NORCIE.
The largest part of ARENA’s involvement in NORCIE will be related to studying the evolving EU economic order. The concept of rules-based openness has always been at the core of EU economic principles, but major pressures are pushing the EU to develop more active and discretionary capabilities. We will study these processes of change from both inside the EU (with interview research on the EU’s evolving policies regarding tradable goods, financial services, and information technology) and in the EU’s key external relationships (researching the related policies of the US, China, Russia, India and Brazil and their consequences for interactions with the EU).
Other and more specific areas of ARENA’s involvement in NORCIE will cover:
- Interactions of EU environmental policies and trade. In partnership with economists at the UiO Department of Economics, ARENA will study the politics of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and related issues, including interviews with firms, interest groups public officials at national and EU levels, with a focus on energy-intensive manufacturing sectors.
- Energy firms and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) rules and norms. In partnership with economists at CMI, ARENA will study how large EU- and US-based companies in the energy sector (including fossil fuels and renewables) relate to ESG considerations. This work will include interviews with decision-makers at each step in firms’ supply chains and in sectoral associations as well as wider data on stakeholder attitudes.

(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Fellow in actively driven surfaces: sensing, soft robotics and flow control
The position is part of two projects funded by the Research Council of Norway, focusing on the development of soft hairy surfaces for flow control and vibration-based soft robots. The overarching goal is to develop a new understanding of fluid flows coupled to complex and actively driven surfaces. Specifically, the projects aim to uncover the fundamental physical principles that govern the coupling between active surfaces and their surrounding fluid environment, and to use this knowledge to inspire new technological applications. The physical designs will be partly bio-inspired and will emphasize sustainability.

The Department of Political Science is recruiting up to two Postdoctoral Fellows (SKO 1352) with specialization in political data science or comparative politics. We are looking for an excellent candidate with the potential of pursuing a long-term career in academia. The successful applicant will be part of the research project, “Authoritarian Threats to Scientific Knowledge” (AutoKnow), which is funded by the European Research Council. The appointment is a fulltime position for a period of three years. Depending on the candidate’s competence and the teaching needs of the department, the fellowship period can be extended up to four years for other types of qualification work including various teaching tasks and obligations.
The primary aim of AutoKnow is to investigate how the production of scientific knowledge is affected by authoritarian regimes and politics. The project will look at how authoritarian rule affects the contents and research trajectories of scientific fields, and which fields are targeted for repression and co-optation by authoritarian rulers and movements. It will use computational text analysis to measure content-dimensions of published science and collect different data on attacks on academic freedom. The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will broadly address exsolution of metal nanoparticles from oxide materials, which show great promise as electrocatalyst for energy conversion technologies. The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will design and characterize materials to elucidate the fundamentals of the exsolution process, including the role of point defects and their interactions, extended defects, strain and more. The primary technique will be scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), using a newly installed state-of-the-art JEOL Mono ARM instrument. The postdoctoral position is part of the QuantERA project ‘QM3L – Quantum protocols for Multimode Mechanics advanced by Machine Learning’, a European consortium combining theory, algorithms, and experiments on multimode mechanical quantum platforms (circuit quantum acoustodynamics with transmon–HBAR devices; HBAR arrays; microwave optomechanics).
The postdoc will work at UiO with Massel and Hjorth-Jensen, focusing on theoretical and algorithmic developments that enable machine-learning-assisted discovery, control, and certification of complex multimode quantum states. Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Fellowship for the project “Truth, Information, Democracy and Law”
The TIDAL project concerns the legal preconditions for a well-functioning democracy in an age marked by increasing generation and dissemination of disinformation, misinformation, and other forms of information disorder (ID). Drawing upon cross-disciplinary insights and approaches, including a policy field study of stakeholder viewpoints in Norway and the United Kingdom, the project tackles the fundamental question of whether the law needs to be reformed in order to tackle ID more effectively and, if yes, what avenue(s) of reform would be most sensible. It does so in light of the vexing problem that measures to combat ID in the name of securing or promoting democracy can end up undermining democracyʼs bedrock by tightening various freedoms and accountability frameworks that help buttress democracy and the rule of law.
The TIDAL project not only examines how best to overcome the latter problem, but elucidates a range of other related matters. These include: the effects of recent legal initiatives by the European Union (EU) to curb ID; the interaction of hard law and soft law codes in this regulatory domain; and current geopolitical tensions at the global level over appropriate legal-regulatory strategies for tackling ID.
At a more fundamental jurisprudential level, the project interrogates the relationship between law and the promotion of truth, analysing the borderlines between when law penalizes the dissemination of lies, “untruths” and other false or misleading information and when it abstains from doing so, along with the rationale(s) for either course of action.
As part of elucidating the relationship of ID and the law with a view to identifying optimal regulatory strategies for reducing the deleterious effects of ID, the project pursues five main sub-objectives:
(1) to map the non-legal structural factors causing ID, drawing upon scholarship in the social sciences and information sciences;
(2) to develop an holistic understanding of ID that bridges insights from the social sciences and information sciences with insights from legal-regulatory scholarship;
(3) to assess how the law, in light of these insights, currently facilitates and impedes ID;
(4) to evaluate what role law should play to remedy ID in the future and to develop and assess new norms, legal concepts, and regulatory frameworks, innovating legal treatment of ID;
(5) to assess the legal innovations within the wider geopolitical situation which Norway finds herself in, with a view to minimizing jurisdictional “overreach”.
The postdoctoral fellow is expected to work closely with TIDAL team members in pursuing the above-listed objectives. The postdoctoral fellow is also expected to engage in international dissemination activities and collaborate with key scholars in the field, outside the project group. Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in archaeological geochemistry and dating
The appointed candidate will work within the overarching goal of the project EcoArch to disentangle the drivers of landscape and climate change in the Afrotropics since the introduction of domesticated food economies.
Candidates should propose a research project that provides, in one form or another, an examination of landscape transformation in the Afrotropics since the advent of agriculture using high-resolution dated sediment cores recovered from lakes or swamps as well as archaeological sites. The candidate will work in conjunction with the Tandem Laboratory at the University of Uppsala to apply state-of-the-art dating analyses coupled with compound-specific isotope analyses (CSIA) to be interpreted in tandem with biomarker analyses.
Applicants are required to upload/attach a research proposal (hf.uio.no) stating how they intend to address the central research questions and offer theoretical and methodological approaches to attend to the project’s objectives. Preference will be given to independent projects devoted to addressing one or more of these following possible themes:
- The roles humans have had over the last 6000 years in shaping ecological baselines.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral research fellowship in gesture-vocalization relations in song performance
The project, SongGesture, aims to significantly advance knowledge on how expert vocalists use gesture in support of their performance goals. Building on recent research showing an effect of gesture on co-occurring vocalization, SongGesture will advance the theorization of gesture-vocalization relations in musical contexts by considering also the physical interactions between gesture and vocal production movements (e.g., breathing and articulation). The project looks at co-singing gesturing practices in three different vocal performance traditions: beatboxing, European art song, and karnatak vocal music from South India. The candidate is not expected to have previous experience with these musical traditions, as this is covered by other project personnel.
The successful candidate for this position is expected to investigate multimodal correspondence between gesture, vocalization and vocal production movements through computational analysis and to explore the implications of the results for multimodal sense-making (how different modalities combine to create meaning). Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Researcher
We are seeking a researcher who will be responsible for Work Package 3 (WP3): Book Censorship and Poetry in Francoist Spain. This subproject investigates how Franco’s regime censored Spanish literature and poetry; how it implemented its censorship and propaganda plans; how writers, in particular poets, collaborated and resisted the regime; and what is the legacy of literary censorship today. It is divided into four thematic research streams: 1) Archives, 2) Ideals, 3) Tactics, and 4) Traces.
The position is based at ILOS, University of Oslo, with an archival research stay in Spain. Fieldwork is expected to be primarily conducted at the Archivo General de la Administración (AGA), in Alcalá de Henares, close to Madrid, with additional training at the University of Alcalá. The researcher is expected to be responsible for data collection in Spain, to develop the Spanish side of a catalogue of censored words and metaphors, as well as entries for the project’s glossary of terms and handbook on the tactics of repression and resistance. Core outputs include 4 articles that stem from preparing and analyzing data, together with methodologies and literature surveys relevant to the topic.
As a team, we will have weekly meetings in Oslo to chart progress, debate ideas, and exchange research plans. While on fieldwork, the researcher will attend them via videocall.
We seek candidates that have a strong motivation and interest in the project’s main topics. The successful candidate must be fluent in Spanish and have a track record in 20th-century Spanish-language literature. Applicants that have developed research on literary censorship and poetry, as well as archival studies, with fieldwork experience, are welcome. Furthermore, a background or previous engagement with digital humanities or digital methodologies is appreciated.

(19) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Researcher bridging immunology, genomics and proteomics (academic-industry collaboration)
The proposed project aims to investigate the polyclonal humoral immune response to a model viral antigen in human samples from pre-exposed individuals. This research integrates advanced techniques, including antigen-specific B-cell sorting, B-cell receptor (BCR) sequencing, and LC-MS/MS-based identification of circulating antigen-specific antibodies. The goal is to link B-cell clonotypes to serum immunoglobulins and resolve functional proteoforms through an immunoproteogenomics approach. The project will involve developing de novo sequencing workflows for antigen-specific antibodies, building proteogenomic pipelines to assemble VH/VL sequences and identify clonotypes. Data will be integrated matching BCR repertoires of PBMCs, tonsil tissue, and matched sera from GSK human biological samples. Computational modeling and machine learning will be essential for antibody identification, epitope prioritization, and cross-cohort comparisons.
The project focuses on deconvoluting pathogen-specific humoral responses to a seasonal viral pathogen by combining paired BCR repertoire sequencing with antigen-resolved LC-MS/MS proteomics. The candidate’s responsibilities will encompass the development and analysis of mass spectrometry methods for antibody isolation and characterization, as well as designing and validating multiparameter flow cytometry panels for antigen-specific B-cell and plasma cell identification and sorting. The role demands rigorous data stewardship, collaboration with immunology, proteomics, and bioinformatics teams, primarily at GSK Siena, and contributing to the dissemination of research findings.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Researcher in Generative AI, Disinformation and Democracy
The NxtGenFake project, funded by the Norwegian Research Council, examines how generative artificial intelligence (AI), particularly large language models, affects the production, dissemination, and understanding of digital content that may challenge democratic values and public trust.
The project investigates how large language models shape political narratives and strategic communication in digital environments. The project focuses on so-called disinformation narratives, meaning narratives of a misleading or inaccurate nature. Large language models enable the production of synthetic content at scale, potentially flooding information ecosystems with text that is difficult to distinguish from human-generated material. At the same time, large language models are increasingly being used for information retrieval, which may amplify the spread of biased or inaccurate representations.
A particular focus of the project is how such models—trained on large datasets including social media—may reproduce disinformation narratives from actors such as Russia and China, and influence public opinion in democratic societies, including Norway. The project analyzes how these disinformation narratives emerge, spread, and affect public discourse.
We are seeking a motivated and skilled researcher to contribute to the NxtGenFake project, with experience in handling and analyzing large datasets, and a willingness to collaborate interdisciplinarily with other project participants on studies and publications.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Researcher in the field of materials for Li-ion Batteries
We are searching for a skilled, creative and ambitious researcher to join our scientific activities within the field of battery materials. The candidate will work in a dynamic team of approximately 10 PhD/MS students and researchers and, therefore, should be skilled to work in team as well as independently.
The successful candidate will be involved in two activities involving synthesis, electrode design and advanced characterization of the materials for Li-ion and Na-ion bat-teries under two projects funded by the Norwegian Research Council.
The candidate will focus on:
- Synthesis of materials
- Electrode development
- Optimization of materials, electrochemical evaluation and operando characterization, including
- data acquisition
- development of electrochemical cells for X-ray based operando tech-niques
- data treatment
- Experiments using synchrotron facilities are foreseen, depending on access and travel regulations.
The candidate will work closely with all group members, who are involved in similar research activities and should have knowledge and understanding of the electrochemical characterization of battery materials in addition to the advanced knowledge in X-ray based characterization techniques.

Two Postdoctoral Research Fellowships (SKO 1352) are available at the Department of Culture, Religion, Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (IKOS), University of Oslo.
These positions are part of the project “Maritime Goddesses: Transnational Connections, Blue Environments, and Ritual Care in East- and Southeast Asia” (MARGO), funded by the European Research Council (ERC). MARGO studies some of the most popular deities in the world and the ways in which people relate to them: Guanyin, Mazu, Benzaiten, and several other goddesses to whom people pray for protection and support. These goddesses are often associated with bodies of water (seas, oceans, rivers, and deltas). They can move, change shape, and transcend political and ontological boundaries. Although these goddesses are central to the ritual lives of billions of people, there has been little research on the ways in which people relate to them in everyday life.
