The Research Associate/Fellow will work on research led by Prof John Heap, using Engineering Biology approaches and focusing on the C-Loop work package on bio-upcycling of fermentation wastes including C1 substrates using a microbial waste-to-products engineered coculture platform. The work will involve C1-consuming microorganisms including photoautotrophs. The post builds on established work and strengths in our lab and involves collaboration with our partners in the C-Loop consortium. The successful candidates will be part of a large team of staff and students tackling ambitious objectives leading to excellent outputs and impacts, with the opportunity to support and mentor more junior researchers. Through the KTP, you will deliver a strategic project that will enable Twining’s to create science-led wellbeing solutions. The KTP will enable Twinings to gain new capabilities in the key technical areas of ingredient characterisation/formulation, digitally enabled product design, and predictive modelling of flavour/function.

You will have the opportunity to demonstrate your ability through supporting the creation of products that truly delight and enhance the wellbeing of the world’s consumers, through smart leveraging of science. An awareness of commercial drivers is desirable, but not essential.   

You should hold a postgraduate qualification (or near to completion) in Food Science or associated Bioscience/Chemistry degree. A PhD (or near to completion) in this subject area is desirable, as is industry experience. Knowledge of food science and/or tea (or polyphenolic) science, as well as extensive experience in data analytics/advanced statistics/machine learning is desirable. Research experience in flavour science and/or food chemistry is advantageous.

Applications are invited to join an ERC-funded research programme in the laboratory of Dr Vinay Shukla. The position is part of the project BreathingUnderground, which explores how oxygen availability within plant roots shapes development, physiology and adaptive responses.

The overall aim of the project is to understand how internal oxygen landscapes arise in roots and how these spatial differences are sensed and integrated with developmental programmes. The work will focus on mechanisms operating at the interface of root tissue organisation, signalling pathways and environmental constraints, using Arabidopsis thaliana as a primary model system.

Applications are invited for a Research Associate/Fellow to join the UKRI-funded project GROUNDBREAKING, which aims to uncover how plant roots sense and penetrate hard soils. Building on our recent discoveries (Mingyuan et al., Nature, 2025; Jiao et al., Nature, 2025), this project will identify novel genes and regulatory pathways that enable roots to perceive and respond to hard soil environments. We are especially interested in candidates eager to explore the interface between cell wall mechanics and soil physical properties applying spatial gene regulation to understand root biomechanics.

This position is ideally suited to a highly motivated and independent researcher with a strong interest in spatial gene regulation, root–soil interactions, and molecular cell biology.

Applicants must hold (or be nearing completion of) a PhD in molecular biology, plant biology, or a related discipline. Candidates close to submitting their PhD thesis in root or cell biology will also be considered.

We are seeking to recruit a highly motivated and enthusiastic organic chemist for a Postdoctoral Research Associate post within the research group of Dr Mattia Silvi (Silvi research group website) based in the GSK Carbon Neutral Laboratory for Sustainable Chemistry at the University of Nottingham. This is a highly challenging project in Synthetic Organic Chemistry and requires excellence in contemporary practical skills, demonstrated by your previous publication record.

This is a full time (36.25 hours per week) 12-months fixed post, with possibility of extension, and is part of a UKRI funded research building on previous research from the Silvi research group. The research will focus on the development of novel reactions based on photoredox-radical chemistry. The new radical processes will be applied in target synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredients and the late-stage functionalisation of complex molecules.

The Pilgrim Group is seeking a highly motivated and talented researcher to join our team (https://www.thepilgrimgroup.co.uk/). This post is funded by Dr Ben Pilgrim’s Royal Society University Research Fellowship and is available for a period of 18 months.

The project will build upon the group’s recent advances in the field of metal-organic cages (for examples of work developed by the previous post holder see J. Am. Chem. Metal-organic cage research within the group is both a fundamental structural discovery programme targeting novel architectures and how to control structural transformations between them, in addition to exploring exciting new functional applications of cages, particularly at the interface with biology/medicine.

We are looking for a skilled synthetic chemist who can efficiently bring established projects to a publication-ready stage as well as contributing their own ideas to new directions for the group’s research. In addition to pursuing their own project, the successful candidate will have delegated responsibility for safe laboratory practice and contribute to the smooth running and day-to-day supervision of students within the Pilgrim group (currently 6 PhD students, 3 MRes). They will also assist Dr Pilgrim in publication and grant writing activities. The post holder will also be given the help and freedom to develop their own research ideas. Hence, this position may be particularly attractive to those looking to develop research independence and leadership.

Candidates should have either already obtained a PhD in a relevant field of chemistry or have submitted their thesis prior to starting. Expertise in the synthesis, purification, and characterisation of organic molecules is required. Prior experience with metal complexes, single crystal X-ray diffraction and/or appropriate computational techniques are all highly desirable. The post holder should be able to prepare high quality figures and supporting information to publication standard. They should have excellent organisational, communication, and team working skills and be comfortable supervising junior researchers.

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate/Fellow in synthetic organic chemistry to work under the supervision of Professor Ross Denton in the GlaxoSmithKline Carbon Neutral Laboratory for Sustainable Chemistry within the School of Chemistry at the University of Nottingham.

The successful applicant will design and synthesise new organocatalysts and explore their application in deoxyamination reactions. The project will also include mechanistic and kinetic studies as well as total synthesis of bioactive amines to demonstrate applicability.

Successful candidates must have a PhD in synthetic organic chemistry or a closely related area. In addition, candidates should have hands-on experience in inert synthesis and organic methodology development, including reactivity studies and mechanistic investigations. Experience in organophosphorus chemistry is advantageous, but not essential. We are seeking to appoint a Research Fellow to join the research team on Rediscovering the Tudor Domesday: evaluating historic data to deepen understanding of the making of regional environments, economies & communities, a three-year project funded by the AHRC. You would work alongside academic staff in the Institute for Name-Studies based in the School of English, and in collaboration with colleagues from the Universities of Exeter and Reading and The National Archives. 

You would contribute to the production and annotation of a new openly accessible digital record of the survey, with specific responsibility for the analysis of place- and personal name material, and of the historical landscape. 

The successful candidate will become part of an ambitious, multi-disciplinary research initiative: “Voices of Indigenous Amazonia: historical processes of sociobiodiversity in the face of the challenges of the Anthropocene”. The project brings together leading institutions and researchers across the UK and Brazil.

The project proposes to study Amazonian biodiversity and its interactions with native peoples, in the long term, within the Upper Negro Indigenous Territory (TI ARN, Amazonas state. This territory stands out for its complex and varied ethnic, historical, and socio-environmental configurations.

The Department of History at the University of Nottingham is seeking a Research Associate/Fellow. This role is associated with an exciting new project, “Establishing the Girl Guide Archive as a Scholarly Resource’, funded jointly by Girlguiding UK and the Arts and Humanities Research Council. The role-holder will be tasked with completing a detailed assessment of the Girlguiding archive (located in Grantham) to explore its research potential and locate the archive’s holdings in relation to both the existing archival landscape and recent historiographical developments. This work would be undertaken with the head archivist, Hannah Jenkinson, with academic mentorship provided by Dr Dean Blackburn and Dr Daniel Hucker (University of Nottingham). The role-holder will need to travel between Nottingham and Grantham; this is easily possible using public transport.

The role-holder will have the opportunity to use their initiative and creativity to identify areas for research, develop research methods and extend their research portfolio. 

Applications are invited to the above role to support the principal investigator (Prof. Kostas Tsintzas) in conducting research on a BBSRC funded project aiming to characterise rhythmicity in human skeletal muscle metabolism. 

The post holder will be responsible for the day-to-day running of this programme of work as part of Prof Tsintzas’ research team in the Division of Physiology, Pharmacology and Neuroscience. This will include using analytical biochemical and molecular biology techniques and writing up their work in order to contribute to published outcomes. 

We are seeking candidates with demonstrable evidence of research experience in tissue metabolism and specialist skills in liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-MS), real time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), western blotting, and spectrophotometry. Experience in biochemical enzyme radioimmunoassays is desirable.

Knowledge of Health and Safety and relevant regulations applying to handling human tissues and ensuring a safe working laboratory environment is also essential.

Candidates must hold a PhD (or equivalent) or be near to completion of a PhD in the field of metabolic and molecular physiology, biochemistry or a related discipline.

Applications are invited for the above post to support the Principal Investigator, Dr Ylenia Chiari, on a funded research project supported by Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks (MFWP). The project aims to investigate the role of epigenetic signatures in adaptation to captivity, with direct conservation applications for aquaculture and conservation, and the potential to advance fundamental understanding of transgenerational epigenetic inheritance. This project is in collaboration with Mr. Matt Boyer (MFWP) and Dr. Gordon Luikart (University of Montana and Flathead Lake Biological Station).

The post holder will be responsible for the day-to-day running of this programme of work as part of Dr Chiari’s research team within the Cells, Organisms and Molecular Genetics (COMGen) group

The role will primarily involve conducting bioinformatic analyses of existing RNA-sequencing and whole-genome DNA methylation datasets from wild and hatchery fish populations. Depending on securing additional funding, there may also be opportunities to carry out fieldwork in Montana (USA).

We are seeking candidates with demonstrable research experience in the analysis of genomic and methylation data. Experience analyzing transcriptomic data and an interest in evolutionary biology and conservation are highly desirable.
