Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-Doctoral Research Visit F/M Interpretable Deep Learning for image-based species identification
With data-driven AI methods becoming prevalent in more and more aspects of our life, there is a growing effort within the AI community to ensure that these methods do not only perform well, but also communicate to humans some elements of the learned internal reasoning that leads to a particular output. This effort towards Explainable AI (XAI) [1] aims at ensuring that humans can understand the process within the AI model, ultimately allowing for a more human-centric AI. The vast majority of methods, those based on feature attribution, aim at pointing out which parts of the input are most responsible for the output, potentially resulting in an ambiguous interpretation that may end up being misleading [2, 3]. We want to explore how to achieve richer and more useful types of explanations, such as those using prototypical examples [4] or natural language [5], and explore the impact that these explanations have on the users in terms of trust and of how much the users are able to learn from the system. In addition, rich explanations, such as those in the form of visual characteristics in natural language, can be designed to provide an interpretable representation of each data sample that can be leveraged for few-shot and zero-shot learning, as long as the characteristics of new classes are known.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-Doctoral Research Visit F/M Personalized Intelligent Tutorial Systems (ITS) for attention training: Modelling of personalization algorithms and effectiveness study
The postdoctoral position addresses the challenge to build a “human-centered digital word” with innovative interactive systems providing “adaptive and personalized interactions with humans” for supporting “their wellbeing and health”. Additionally, this PhD program is primarily based on interdisciplinary approach of individuals’ intrinsic motivation (curiosity) as critical ingredient for synergistic human-computer interactions. Today, very few studies provide information on the impact of intrinsic motivation and curiosity on the inter-individual variability of learning across life span or on their neuro-protective role against the aging effects or attentional disorders.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-Doctoral Research Visit F/M Stream data processing in shared Fog environments
The mutual low-latency objective for both Data Stream Processing (DSP) and Fog environments has resulted in a continuous growth of DSP deployments on Fog environments. The success of DSP deployments in the Fog relies on operators placements and the ability to sustain low latency. Accordingly, much work have focused on placement strategies across Edge-servers or across hybrid Cloud and Edge environments. Previous efforts have focused on reducing the volume of communication overhead between nodes (inter-node communication) and dividing the computation between edge servers and clouds. Unfortunately, they are oblivious to (1) the dynamic nature of data streams (i.e., data volatility and bursts) and to (2) the bandwidth and resource heterogeneity in the Edge, which negatively affects the performance of stream data applications.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-Doctoral Research Visit F/M Causal data analysis of in-silico trials
Despite massive investment in healthcare, huge R&D cost increase and regulatory pathway complexity hamper tremendously commercialisation of new devices & medicines, putting patient populations at risk of not receiving adequate therapy. Computer modelling and simulation (CM&S) can create scientific evidence based on controlled investigations including variability, uncertainty quantification, and satisfying demands for safety, efficacy & improved access. Cardiac modelling has dramatically gained maturity over the last decades, with personalisation to clinical data enabling validation. The proposed position is embedded within the SimCardioTest project, launched on January 1st 2021, and funded by the European Union H2020 program, to demonstrate feasibility, effectiveness and benefits of in-silico trials for cardiac devices & drugs; with a broad aim to gain the trust of scientists, companies, regulatory bodies, physicians, patients and to promote healthcare innovation in Europe and beyond. We selected three cardiac use cases where CM&S is mature enough and that represent the most common cardiac pathologies, to demonstrate a standardised and rigorous approach for in-silico clinical trials. SimCardioTest aims to develop a unified standardised and secure cloud-based platform where in-silico trials for the selected cardiac use cases run seamlessly. SimCardioTest gathers exceptional representatives of expertise of European and American computer modeling and simulation and in the field of medical devices. Ten partners from Belgium, France, Italy, Norway, Spain and USA collaborate to SimCardioTest: 2 large companies (Microport – CRM and Boston Scientific), 2 SMEs (ExactCure and InSilicoTrials), 2 research organizations (Inria and Simula), 3 Universities (University of Bordeaux, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Polytechnic University of Valencia) and 1 international non-profit organisation (The Virtual Physiological Human Institute).

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-Doctoral Research Visit F/M Energy-Aware Federated Learning
Deep neural networks have enabled impressive accuracy improvements across many machine learning tasks. Often the highest scores are obtained by the most computationally-hungry models [1]. As a result, training a state-of-the-art model now requires substantial computational resources which demand considerable energy, along with the associated economic and environmental costs. Research and development of new models multiply these costs by thousands of times due to the need to try different model architectures and different hyper-parameters.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-Doctoral Research Visit F/M Design of strategies and tools for placing HPC tasks and data on heterogeneous memory architecture
The memory hierarchy of HPC platforms keeps becoming even more complex. Now that all processors have multiple levels of caches, memory itself is changing with the advent of different technologies with different performance characteristics. Heterogeneous memories first appeared in HPC several years ago with the Intel Xeon Phi processor. Custom strategies were implemented to place bandwidth-sensitive data buffers on the appropriate memory. The emergence on non-volatile memory DIMMs (that may be used either as fast storage or as slow but high-capacity memory) brought similar questions. Moreover several ARM and x86 platforms are going to combine HBM and DRAM on the road to exascale. There is a critical need for software stacks to learn portable ways to identify different kinds of memories, to abstract their characteristics in terms of performance, and to decide where to allocate which data buffer.
