We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will focus on atomistic understanding of the effects of reduced dimensionality and heterogeneities in quantum materials for quantum information science (QIS) applications. Oak Ridge National Laboratory has an exciting opportunity to simulate the plasma boundary of fusion reactors and find solutions for divertor components and operating regimes that can the handle extreme power and particle loads. The Power Exhaust and Particle Control (PE&PC) Group of the Fusion Energy Division aims to identify solutions that are compatible with requirements of the divertor and core plasma during long pulse operation, including advanced concepts such as liquid metal plasma facing components. The PE&PC group performs simulations and collaborates on experiments on tokamak, stellarator, and linear plasma devices around the world.
The selected candidate will be applying the world-leading plasma boundary simulation code, SOLPS-ITER, to these experiments. The simulations will inform the design of divertor components for the next generation of fusion reactors, including performing integrated simulations that consider the core, pedestal, and scrape-off-layer with a focus to model these interfaces. The position relies on performing important validation of the physics models between experiments and these simulations, and opportunities also exist to participate in validation efforts on fusion energy user facilities worldwide.

In this position, you will be expected to contribute to the development of methodology for investigating the structure and dynamics of enzymes involved in disease using X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering and molecular simulations and will participate in structure-assisted drug design utilizing standard approaches, VR and AI tools in collaboration with computational scientists. You will join a multi-disciplinary research team that is developing and applying isotopic labeling, neutron diffraction and scattering techniques to understand and control the structure, function, and dynamics of drug targets. We are seeking two Postdoctoral Research Associates. One will focus on the synthesis and characterization of dynamic polymers to elucidate their non-equilibrium states, and another will focus on polymer upcycling especially deconstruction of various commercial step-growth polymers. This position resides in the Soft Materials and Membranes group in the Separation and Polymer Chemistry section, Chemical Sciences Division, Physical Sciences Directorate, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
As part of our team, the postdoc will synthesize novel dynamic polymers and conduct in-depth characterization especially using rheometer combined with Raman and dielectric spectroscopy as well as small-angle neutron scattering. The Environmental Sciences Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks a postdoctoral researcher skilled in biogeochemistry to work on a project investigating the effects of natural and engineered materials on the stabilization of mercury (Hg) in contaminated environmental media (air, soils, sediments, water).
The successful candidate will focus their research efforts on understanding the fate and transformation of Hg under a broad range of environmental conditions (temperature, humidity) in engineered and natural settings. Specific tasks include design and execution of independent experiments, working independently and within a team in lab and field settings collecting, processing, and preserving samples, and processing and analyzing the samples in the laboratory. Summarizing research in oral and written format, active participation in internal and external scientific meetings, and publishing research in open peer-reviewed journals is expected.
Opportunities exist to collaborate with skilled researchers in hydrology, geochemistry, environmental microbiology, and ecology within ORNL, at collaborating Universities and other National Laboratories.
This position requires a Ph.D. in environmental chemistry, (bio)geochemistry, soil science, civil/environmental engineering, or a related discipline. Experience in Hg research, knowledge of materials characterization and analysis methods, applying (bio)geochemical models, and the analysis of kinetic data are desired. ORNL’s mathematics research efforts provide the fundamental mathematical methods and algorithms needed to model complex physical, chemical, and biological systems. ORNL’s computational science research efforts enable scientists to efficiently implement these models at the extreme scale of computing and to store, manage, analyze, and visualize the massive amounts of data that result. ORNL’s artificial intelligence research provides the techniques to link the data producers, e.g., supercomputers and large experimental facilities, with the data consumers, i.e., scientists who need the data.
The selected individual will join a team that is developing probabilistic and ensemble machine learning methods
for foundational AI models in massively networked dynamics problems. The successful candidate will conduct research in activation and conversion of carbon dioxide to high-value chemicals. Research will include catalyst development, reaction engineering, batch and continuous flow reactor development, synthetic and analytical chemistry.
The research spans basic to applied research technology for carbon management. The candidate will be expected to work in multi-disciplinary teams. The PFF Group is a global leader in coated particle fuel research for advanced reactors (e.g., tristructural isotropic (TRISO) coated particle fuel) and emerging nuclear technologies (e.g., space nuclear propulsion). The PFF group supports activities related to both fabrication and post-irradiation examination of coated particle fuel and fuel forms. This position would support anisotropy and microstructural characterization of nuclear fuel materials to establish a link between nuclear fuel materials properties and performance. Analysis will be used to support larger irradiation efforts and interpretation of new fuel development.
