We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will focus on atomistic understanding of the effects of reduced dimensionality and heterogeneities in quantum materials for quantum information science (QIS) applications.  This position resides in the Scanning Tunneling Microscopy Group in the Nanomaterials Characterization Section, Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS), at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

As part of our research team, you will contribute to research in quantum materials including topological materials, magnetic materials, 2D atomic layers, and other atomic wires and ribbons that exhibit novel electronic and magnetic behaviors. Your experimental work will employ Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM), which will include studies using milli-Kelvin vector field STM and cryogenic 4-Probe STM, combined with molecular beam epitaxy growth for STM imaging, spectroscopy, manipulation, and transport. Oak Ridge National Laboratory has an exciting opportunity to simulate the plasma boundary of fusion reactors and find solutions for divertor components and operating regimes that can the handle extreme power and particle loads. The Power Exhaust and Particle Control (PE&PC) Group of the Fusion Energy Division aims to identify solutions that are compatible with requirements of the divertor and core plasma during long pulse operation, including advanced concepts such as liquid metal plasma facing components. The PE&PC group performs simulations and collaborates on experiments on tokamak, stellarator, and linear plasma devices around the world.

The selected candidate will be applying the world-leading plasma boundary simulation code, SOLPS-ITER, to these experiments. The simulations will inform the design of divertor components for the next generation of fusion reactors, including performing integrated simulations that consider the core, pedestal, and scrape-off-layer with a focus to model these interfaces. The position relies on performing important validation of the physics models between experiments and these simulations, and opportunities also exist to participate in validation efforts on fusion energy user facilities worldwide.

We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher who will focus on additive manufacturing of thermoelectric materials for advanced applications. You will work with ceramic and intermetallic materials. You will conduct experimental research with additive manufacturing via powder-bed fusion and binder jetting. In addition, advanced materials processing methods such as spark plasma sintering will also be utilized for proof concept experiments. In this position, you will be expected to contribute to the development of methodology for investigating the structure and dynamics of enzymes involved in disease using X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering and molecular simulations and will participate in structure-assisted drug design utilizing standard approaches, VR and AI tools in collaboration with computational scientists. You will join a multi-disciplinary research team that is developing and applying isotopic labeling, neutron diffraction and scattering techniques to understand and control the structure, function, and dynamics of drug targets. As an ORNL postdoctoral fellow you will have access to state-of-the-art facilities for isotopic labeling, biophysical characterization, and X-ray diffraction, as well as access to world class facilities for neutron diffraction and scattering, and molecular simulations. This complex community likely benefits plant health and biomass productivity in the face of changing soil and environmental conditions. A key research emphasis within the project is on metabolic and molecular understandings of plant-microbe and microbe-microbe interactions in these complex systems. To support this effort, an interdisciplinary group focuses on microbial isolation from rhizosphere samples, physiological characterization, image analysis, comparative genomics, plant-microbe model system development and experimentation for understanding molecular mechanisms of microbe-microbe and plant-microbe interactions that influence microbial community structure and host plant physiology and phenotypes. We are seeking two Postdoctoral Research Associates. One will focus on the synthesis and characterization of dynamic polymers to elucidate their non-equilibrium states, and another will focus on polymer upcycling especially deconstruction of various commercial step-growth polymers. In polymer upcycling project, the postdoc will conduct deconstruction of various commercial products of step-growth polymers by working with an industry collaborator as well as investigate fundamental science of polymer deconstruction and upcycling. The postdocs are expected to be involved with other polymer science projects such as the development of polymer composites, adhesives, building materials, and polymer electrolytes for energy storage and conversion.

The successful candidate will focus their research efforts on understanding the fate and transformation of Hg under a broad range of environmental conditions (temperature, humidity) in engineered and natural settings.  Specific tasks include design and execution of independent experiments, working independently and within a team in lab and field settings collecting, processing, and preserving samples, and processing and analyzing the samples in the laboratory. Summarizing research in oral and written format, active participation in internal and external scientific meetings, and publishing research in open peer-reviewed journals is expected.

Opportunities exist to collaborate with skilled researchers in hydrology, geochemistry, environmental microbiology, and ecology within ORNL, at collaborating Universities and other National Laboratories.

This position requires a Ph.D. in environmental chemistry, (bio)geochemistry, soil science, civil/environmental engineering, or a related discipline. This project will be focusing on the development of advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI)/Machine Learning (ML) tools for the measurements of 3D tensorial strain in crystalline materials using neutrons at the Spallation Neutron Source VENUS beamline (https://neutrons.ornl.gov/venus). VENUS is nearing completion of its construction and will start commissioning in July 2024. One of the unique time-of-flight imaging capabilities enabled at VENUS is Bragg edge radiography. The measurement of the Bragg edge shift provides information of a lattice plane shift through a sample. This project aims at enabling the 3D reconstruction of the tensorial strain values in 3D using Bragg edge tomography.
