This project aims at investigating the potential of clusters of strong volcanic eruptions to cause sustained cold events under pre-Holocene climate scenarios. The successful applicant will design and run transient climate model experiments using Earth system models that include atmospheric chemistry-aerosol-climate coupling, i.e. one or two of the following models: UKESM1, MPI-ESM1.2, and HadCM3. The simulations will be performed under a range of glacial boundary conditions to determine the cooling potential of volcanic clusters and assess short- and long-term memory of regional and global climatic variability. Particular attention will be paid to how volcanic cluster signals propagate into the subsurface ocean and the associated determinant processes, the ocean memory effects and the coupling between northward heat transport, Arctic sea ice and the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. Finally, the experiments will be evaluated using a wide network of proxy-climate data by comparing reconstructed and simulated spatial temperature and precipitation patterns.

We are seeking a Clinical Research Associate wishing to pursue research in the area linking glucose sensor data with insulin pump delivery (closed loop systems) in adults, children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes. The research is funded by the National Institute for Health Research and other funding agencies. Possession of GMC licence to practise is essential. The post would suit a doctor in training at UK FY2 / IMT level or above (or equivalent), wishing to gain experience in clinical and translational research. The Department of Radiology is seeking a Clinical Research Associate with interests in Oncological Imaging and PET-CT / PET-MR. This role is funded by the Cancer Research UK (CRUK) Cambridge Centre’s Advanced Cancer Imaging (ACI) programme, which is a cross-departmental collaboration in cutting-edge imaging research, developing novel imaging methods and agents. The Clinical Research Associate will be part of the Department of Radiology with close links to the Department of Oncology and the CRUK Cambridge Institute.

This post represents an excellent opportunity for a medically qualified trainee with an interest in oncology, endocrinology or metabolism to join a multidisciplinary team of clinical and basic scientists investigating the drivers of cancer cachexia. The central hypothesis to this work is that cachexia is driven by the tumour itself, with molecular signals from the tumour activating and interacting with hormonal pathways that result in anorexia, systemic sickness and tissue wasting. By understanding how cancer biology and the endocrine system interact, we believe we can discover novel treatments for this devastating condition which, to date, remains without an effective treatment.

The postholder will work within a programme focussed on understanding mitochondrial dynamics and membrane contact sites as key regulators of cell fate decisions. Mitochondria form a dynamic and connected network, which is constantly remodelled by cycles of membrane fission and fusion. These dynamic transitions are not only required to ensure a proper mitochondrial function but also to respond to cellular needs and adapt to the metabolic state of the cell. To execute cellular functions, mitochondria also establish membrane contact sites with other organelles, including the endoplasmic reticulum, peroxisomes, trans-Golgi network vesicles and lysosomes. These organelle membrane contact sites are hotspots for metabolites flux and tightly regulate mitochondrial architecture. While defects in mitochondrial morphology or contact sites have been associated with human diseases, the molecular mechanisms linking mitochondrial membrane remodelling to cell fate decisions are not fully understood.

The post holder will be expected to create a strong track record of publishing high impact papers and disseminate the results of their work in any ways that seem appropriate and effective (e.g. via conferences and seminars). They will be responsible for compliance with all the relevant laws (Home Office, HTA, HFEA).

The Library Syndicate invites applications for the Oschinsky Research Associateship for the tenure of 1 October 2023 to 31 July 2024 in collaboration with Girton College. The Oschinsky Research Associate will be free to pursue research of their choosing in any aspect of the University Library’s collections relating to its medieval manuscripts or medieval archive collections, including their palaeography, diplomatic or codicology. The Library’s medieval collections include manuscripts in Arabic, Hebrew and other Middle Eastern languages as well as Latin and European vernaculars. The proposed research should be of benefit to scholars using the collections in the future. The Fellow will also be expected to participate fully in the life and activities of the University Library, e.g. through participation in the Library’s research and public engagement programmes (comprising activities such as talks, seminars, displays, participation in social media, and other events). In vivo, cells migrate through tight spaces and may undergo division in crowded environments, both in physiological and pathological contexts, for example during immune cells diapedesis or cancer cell dissemination. These phenomena are difficult to observe in vivo, especially in mammalian models. Key studies in the field have largely exploited in vitro systems, for example culturing cells in 3D collagen matrices or microfabrication of PDMS microchannels, to mimic interstitial confining environments. From this wealth of work, it has become clear that cells experiencing physical confinement during cell migration suffer mechanical stress. This causes deformation of the largest organelle, the nucleus, and loss of nuclear integrity, thus inducing DNA damage. Physical compression can even promote genetic diversity in cancer cells. In addition, when cells in culture undergo mitosis under mechanical compression, they show extensive cortical blebbing and suffer division defects. Together, these findings show that mechanical stress negatively impacts the integrity of the genome and this has been proposed to underlie cancer initiation and progression. However, the consequences of mechanical compression on cells during in vivo cell migration remain so far unexplored.

We are looking for an adventurous researcher to explore Monte Carlo methods for radiation transport (as part of the EPSRC grant, MaThRad). The Cambridge Nuclear Energy group is developing a modern, modifiable radiation transport code, SCONE. We are looking for software developers/researchers with experience of implementing physical models who are keen to understand radiation transport and Monte Carlo code development. The ideal candidate will work within a team to improve SCONE whilst also contributing ideas to expand the application of Monte Carlo methods.

A position is available to work on rendering for ultra-realistic 3D HDR displays with a starting date between March and June 2023. The project’s aim is to develop new rendering techniques for future display technologies capable of reproducing realistic depth cues, accurate colour and high dynamic range. The successful candidate will work with traditional computer graphics, neural and image-based rendering methods to generate highly realistic content for our ultra-realistic display (https://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/research/rainbow/projects/hdrmfs/). The goal is to create a pipeline that lets us capture a 3D scene with high colour and geometric accuracy, represent it efficiently and then render it in real time on our display. A Research Assistant/Associate position is available in the Department of Computer Science and Technology to work on the EPSRC-funded Adaptive PETs to Protect & emPower People during Life Transitions (AP4L) project. We are looking to appoint a computer scientist reporting to Dr Alice Hutchings. The project is being undertaken with the Universities of Surrey, Queen Mary, Strathclyde, Edge Hill, and Edinburgh.

This project involves the prediction of mechanical properties from a characterisation of the microstructure of high temperature nickel-based superalloys. This will allow the modelling of complex components where the finished microstructure varies following a complex manufacturing process. The researcher will liaise with Rolls-Royce over the appropriate techniques to characterise defect densities and distributions, including dislocation densities, slip band positions and displacements. Techniques used will involve the use of advanced scanning and electron microscopy techniques such as EBSD and TEM and Digital Image Correlation, together with the analysis of the results.

A position is available to work on visual models and metrics for deep learning and optimisation. The project aims to develop a family of image/video cost functions and evaluation metrics that predict the perceived degradation of visual quality while accounting for important factors like display size or colour gamut. We are especially interested in novel display modes, such as AR and VR. This work is done in a collaboration with our industrial partner, Meta Reality Labs.

The role holder will be expected to conduct postdoctoral-level research in collaboration with some of the investigators named above, as appropriate for the agreed research topic. Collaboration with other members of the group, in particular other postdoc and junior members, as well as collaborations across as well as outside the department are highly encouraged. The role holder will also be expected to contribute to the general life and scientific environment of the Theory of Condensed Matter group, for example contributing to the organisation of internal and external seminars, and offering short graduate-level lectures based on their current topic of research.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a key analytical role in the Department of Public Health and Primary Care, University of Cambridge, funded by Cancer Research UK. A key responsibility of the post holder will be to utilise population-wide electronic health records to investigate the generalisability and transportability of models for the early detection and diagnosis of cancer.

This project will focus on understanding the effects of whipworm infection on intestinal epithelial stem cell fate and on stromal and immune cell responses that result in changes in mucosal physiology and inflammation, enabling chronic infections. Specifically, this project will characterise the gene expression changes (using bulk, single-cell and spatial transcriptomics) of intestinal epithelial cells and stem cell niche populations across infection and after eradication of the parasite. Stem cell remodelling pathways modulated by the parasite will be further studied using lineage tracing and imaging, and stem and stromal cell function will be assessed using organoid assays. We anticipate this work will lead to fundamental new knowledge on the whipworm mucosal niche, potentially yielding new targets for anti-parasitic therapies and providing novel insights into how intestinal epithelia repair damage with relevant application toward intestinal inflammatory diseases.

The position is part of a collaborative UKRI BBSRC research grant, to understand how epigenetic modification and nuclear metabolism interact to maintain neuronal identity during development and aging. We are looking for postdoctoral research associate to join the group of Marko Hyvönen (https://hyvonen.bioc.cam.ac.uk) at the Department of Biochemistry on a BBSRC-funded sLOLA project to identify and characterise new plastic degrading enzymes, “plastizymes”. The Unit, based at the University of Cambridge, is a partnership with England’s blood service – NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) – ensuring that research outcomes are beneficial and translatable to blood service operation.

In the time it takes you to read this sentence, your body will have finished producing about 5 million new cells; each of these cells had to accurately copy, or replicate, the six billion bases of DNA in their genome exactly once. DNA replication stress is characterised by the frequent slowing and stalling of replication forks, which can result in the chromosomal breaks and rearrangements that lead to genome instability, and ultimately to cancer. Replication stress can be induced by oncogenes, leading to the hypothesis that oncogene-induced replication stress is an early driver of cancer. Viruses such as human papillomavirus (HPV) bring viral oncogenes into the cells they infect, and this research will use the unique model of HPV-infected human skin cells as a model system to uncover the precise steps from oncogene-induced replication stress, to genome instability, to cancer initiation.

A position exists, for a Research Nurse or Senior Research Nurse to take on a role in our expanding translational research group, investigating ageing and age-related conditions. Ageing has long been considered an irreversible condition and the result of time. Several research findings challenge this dogma: at a cellular level it is possible to differentiate biological age from chronological age, lifespan can be modulated with behavior and diet, and recent clinical studies have found that it is possible to reverse the epigenetic age of individuals using various strategies.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, dedicated MRI Radiographer to join our small, friendly team of Radiographers and multi-discipline scientists. The McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research wishes to appoint a Senior Research Associate as a PI to independently lead, co-create and operationally implement research projects in close collaboration with the Disney Professor, Cyprian Broodbank, and associated colleagues. Specifically, the successful candidate will focus on (i) the future development of research into the later prehistoric Maghreb, based on fieldwork and associated analysis at the site of Oued Beht, Morocco; (ii) co-design and responsibility for operational execution of a new digital, GIS-led programme of archaeology and heritage documentation on the island of Cyprus; (iii) analysis and publication delivery of the Kythera Island Project, a large-scale, interdisciplinary project based around intensive field survey and associated analysis on the Aegean island of Kythera, Greece. They will possess outstanding relevant digital research skills and regional knowledge, as well as the research quality and postdoctoral experience necessary to lead- and co-produce outputs of outstanding REF quality. They are encouraged to apply for and hold research grants on relevant subjects in their own right and, subject to time availability, will advance independent research projects compatible with those already extant. The post is based in Cambridge but will involve short periods of research in Greece, Cyprus and Morocco.

This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the leading Stroke Research Groups both within the UK and internationally, and make a real difference to patient care. The post-holder will join an ongoing internationally recognised programme investigating the genetic basis of cerebrovascular disease. They will play a key role in the statistical genetics part of the stroke genetics programme. This post is funded by a programme grant form the Stroke Association investigating genetic risk in cerebral small vessel disease and vascular cognitive impairment.

This position is based in the Unit’s ‘early life aetiology and mechanisms’ team, led by Professors John Perry and Ken Ong. The primary role of this post is to lead statistical genetics projects aiming to identify and characterise genes and biological mechanisms associated with type 2 diabetes and related metabolic consequences. Specific areas of research in the programme include a focus on obesity across the life course, reproductive ageing and aspects of biological ageing such as clonal mosaicism and DNA damage response.
