PCA Engineers Limited (PCA) and Cambridge University’s Whittle Laboratory have secured funding for a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) project to develop and enable the commercialisation of a novel low-cost, high-efficiency turbine for Waste Heat Recovery systems. The 2-year project involves the manufacture of a turbine design, and the design, assembly and commissioning of an experimental rig on which to test a baseline and a redesigned turbine.

This position is part of a recently awarded £6.8 million EPSRC Programme Grant on harnessing vibration induced enhancement of transport in functional materials with soft structural dynamics that is aiming to develop better materials for a broad range of energy and bioelectronic applications. The grant involves an interdisciplinary collaboration between the Departments of Physics (Friend, Greenham, Rao, Sirringhaus), Chemistry (Grey, Bronstein), Materials Science (Monserrat) and Electrical Engineering (Malliaras) at the University of Cambridge and the Department of Chemistry at the University of Oxford (McCulloch, Goodwin). Working alongside collaborators in this interdisciplinary environment will be a key part of the work.

The ideal candidate should have a PhD or be about to obtain a PhD in Chemistry, Physics or a related area, and a strong background in optical microscopy, electrochemistry and battery materials. Experience with optical setup design, optical modelling and data analysis of large microscopy data sets would be a plus.

The Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute, a joint Institute by Cancer Research UK and the University of Cambridge, is situated in the centre of the Addenbrooke’s Biomedical Campus in Cambridge. The specific project will focus initially on the use of CRISPR tools to model human genetic variation in organoids. There will be excellent scope for innovation and direction-setting, focusing on the long-term aim of identifying and testing potential disease-modifying pathways.

The post holder will work within a programme focused on mitochondrial transport proteins, which are crucial for the functioning of mammalian cells. This project is funded by Apollo Therapeutics and focusses on the development of specific inhibitors of the mitochondrial pyruvate carrier (MPC). MPC has emerged as a promising drug target for metabolic disorders, including non-alcoholic steatohepatitis and diabetes, metabolically dependent cancers and neurodegenerative diseases. The human MPC is a heterodimer of two homologous small membrane proteins, forming two distinct complexes either MPC1/MPC2 or MPC1L/MPC2 [1]. The goal is to develop novel inhibitors of human MPC to treat the aforementioned diseases. Thermostability shift and transport assays have already been developed to screen for better and more specific binders [1]. The project involves a collaboration with Apollo and associated Contract Research Organizations as well as with different experts on mitochondrial biology within the MRC-MBU. The post-holder will participate in every stage of the process, including protein purification, screening of novel binders by thermostability shift and transport assays, interacting with other team members and collaborators, and preparing of manuscripts/IP.

We seek a statistician interested in human genetics who wants to apply machine learning to estimate cell population frequencies from bulk gene expression data. A common approach to identify dysregulated pathways in diseases is to compare gene expression profiles from healthy vs disease samples. However, the cellular composition of many biological samples is heterogeneous, and, given that many disease processes involve cell infiltration and expansion, such comparisons are confounded by changes in cellular composition. In addition, it is generally recognised that rare populations play a critical role in the pathogenesis of complex diseases, therefore, the ability to measure and interpret phenotypic changes between specific conditions at the cell subset level is critical to obtain a detailed understanding of the role of each cell subset in disease. However, in practice, measuring the frequency of such populations in large cohorts of human samples can be very challenging. Thus, methodologies to infer population frequencies from bulk transcriptome data opens up many possibilities towards understanding disease mechanisms.

Alcohol related liver disease (ALD) is responsible for more than 6000 deaths a year in the UK and costs the NHS £3.5 billion. Alcoholic hepatitis is a florid presentation of ALD in which patients present with jaundice and liver failure. Unfortunately, around 30% of people admitted to hospital with this condition will die within 3 months. The treatment of alcoholic hepatitis is complicated by the fact that there is inflammation within the liver whilst the patient is very susceptible to infection. As a result, treatment with drugs, such as steroids, which suppress the immune system may exacerbate the risk of infection.

The Pellegrini Lab (https://www.plantsci.cam.ac.uk/directory/adam-pellegrini) is recruiting for a postdoc position (2.5 years) investigating ecosystem responses to altered fire and grazing regimes in global drylands. The research will consist of visiting research sites in North America, Africa, Australia, and South America, measuring plants and soils periodically over two years (e.g., measurements of plant NPP, soil greenhouse gas fluxes, nitrogen mineralization), and performing several biogeochemical measurements in the lab. This will involve travel and lodging in field locations for multiple months each year. The field and lab work will be supported by a full-time technician. Lab analyses include physiological traits of leaves and roots and soil properties and processes (e.g., carbon isotopes, density fractionations, microbial activity).

The beneficial interaction of plants with endomycorrhizal fungi commences via mutual recognition in the rhizosphere. We identified a receptor complex that is required for perception of beneficial fungi by plants [Gutjahr, Gobbato et al., Science (2015), Choi et al., Nat Commun 2020], and also for plant development. Preliminary data suggest that the symbiosis signalling ability is a derived and not an ancestral trait. This project seeks to reproduce the evolutionary trajectory in order to define the protein features that condition signalling specificity. The projected work will involve a high-resolution metagenomics approach combined with functional validation in rice. Applicants must have a solid background in plant molecular genetics; available knowledge in basic bioinformatics, running command-line tools and performing data analysis in R or Python would be advantageous.

The laboratory of Professor Susan Ozanne (http://www.mrl.ims.cam.ac.uk/research/principal-investigators/susan-ozanne/) is seeking a postdoctoral research associate who has experience in cardio-metabolic phenotyping in rodent models. Our main research interest is in understanding how obesity and impaired glucose tolerance during pregnancy impacts on offspring cardio-metabolic health. We are particularly interested in establishing intervention strategies in the mother that improve both maternal and offspring cardiovascular and metabolic health. Supported by the British Heart Foundation, this post will involve cardio-metabolic phenotyping of rodent models to study the effects of interventions that target insulin resistance and oxidative stress.

The project is a collaboration between Universities of Cambridge (Kathryn Lilley), Durham (Ari Sadanandom), Liverpool (Andy Jones) and Nottingham (Malcolm Bennett). The PDRA will also investigate the spatial organisation of SUMOylated proteome, both in terms of cell type specificity and sub-cellular distribution. Results arising from this investigation will be integrated with the phenomics, ionomics and imaging data generated by our research partners to generate the first of its kind, SUMO Cell Atlas, and decipher the SUMO-code syntax in guiding plant adaptation (Arabidopsis and rice).

The candidate would join an international team of biologists studying cell migration, mechanosensing and the molecular mechanisms of cancer metastasis. This project is funded by the Human Frontier Scientific Program Organization (HFSPO) and is a part of a joint programme with groups in Japan and USA. Our goal is to build a scanning ion conductance microscope (SICM) and use it to study how cells couple their migration with energetic demands. The University of Cambridge and MRC Mitochondrial Biology Unit (Director: Professor Judy Hirst) wishes to appoint a research assistant to join Dr Alex Whitworth and the Mitochondrial Neurodegeneration group. The Mitochondrial Neurodegeneration group pursues an integrated programme of investigations which elucidate critical homeostatic mechanisms that regulate the integrity of mitochondria and maintain the normal neuronal functioning. In particular, the group uses Drosophila and cellular models to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis of various neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s Disease and Motor Neuron Disease.

The preferred candidate will have a PhD (or equivalent) in Health Data Informatics, Data Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Operational Research or other related quantitative subjects. A position is available to work on visual models and metrics for deep learning and optimisation. The project aims to develop a family of image/video cost functions and evaluation metrics that predict the perceived degradation of visual quality while accounting for important factors like display size or colour gamut. Additive manufacturing, commonly also known as 3D printing, offers virtually limitless opportunities to make devices by controlling geometry, material composition, and processing conditions at every point in an object. The wider adoption of additive manufacturing is limited, though, by challenges including manufacturing process errors, poor design for additive manufacturing, lack of trained staff, and material quality. This project will involve using AI to address these challenges, for instance by using camera and other sensor data to correct and prevent manufacturing errors in additive processes. S2UPPlant is a NERC-funded interdisciplinary research project which aims to produce and characterise new compostable materials from natural feedstocks, with the highest potential for industrial scale-up and a rigorous assessment of their environmental and economic impact and changes required for widespread adoption. The outcomes will be an improved scientific understanding of naturally derived plastics and a suite of prototype materials suitable for emerging markets in compostable films and fibres. The project aims to understand the functions of hereditary spastic paraplegia proteins in the molecular pathogenesis of axonal degeneration. The work will be at the interface between cell biology (especially membrane traffic) and molecular neuroscience, and will begin with functional genomic synthetic lethality screens using iPSC-derived neuronal models of HSP. The Pharmacokinetics/Bioanalytics (PK/B) Core Facility based in the CRUK Cambridge Institute offers a diverse analytical service to the research groups for the quantification of small molecules in support of a wide range of pre-clinical and clinical based projects. The Research Assistant role will involve the development, validation and execution of quantitative LC-MS/MS methods for small molecules in a wide variety of biological matrices.We are looking for an experienced, motivated and focused individual willing to learn new laboratory skills. The MRC funded post here at the world-renowned MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit (University of Cambridge) will identify individual differences in the locus coeruleus, decision making and neurophysiology (M/EEG) in people with or at risk of Alzheimer’s disease. The project combines behaviour, electrophysiology, optogenetics, chemogenetics, and calcium imaging across the visual system and the hippocampal/parahippocampal network, using the mouse as an animal model. The postdoctoral researcher will join a supportive and multi-disciplinary research environment, collaborate with computational neuroscientists, and closely interact with experts in the fields of visual processing and spatial navigation.

Our group leverages a range of state-of-the-art computational biology techniques to study G protein coupled receptors (GPCRs), an extensive family of proteins found across human cells and tissues. Individual family members detect different signals reaching the cell membrane and convey their messages to signalling partners that activate a variety of physiological responses inside our cells. Due to their capacity to regulate cell responses, GPCRs have become the most common drug targets. However, there are still many aspects of GPCR function that remain unresolved, thus hampering our understanding of the key molecular mechanisms that underlie receptor signalling in cell physiology and in therapeutic responses.

You will join a pioneering research programme to investigate the underlying principles of immune cell-mediated steroid biosynthesis in regulating cancer immunity. This is an exciting new opportunity for a highly motivated computational researcher to join Professor Sir Shankar Balasubramanian’s pioneering research programme to play a key role in advancing the understanding of sequence, structure and chemical modifications in DNA and RNA. Using their expert knowledge of programming languages, statistical/machine learning methods, bioinformatics tools and resources, the ideal candidate will use and develop computational approaches to transform raw sequencing data into biologically meaningful information. The successful candidate will have strong problem analysis/solving skills and be able to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team working at the interface between chemistry, biology and bioinformatics. This is a vital post and the applicant will join a small team, with two other bioinformaticians, applying their expertise across the group. The role will be focussed on innovative technology and on translational research and we would welcome candidates with industrial experience.

The Centre for Trophoblast Research (CTR) was founded in 2007 as a Centre of excellence to promote scientific study of the placenta, early development and maternal-fetal interactions during pregnancy. It brings together over 30 Principal Investigators, many of whom are recognized international experts in their fields. We are inviting applications from clinicians with an interest and experience in oncology to apply for the CRUK Cambridge Cancer Centre funded Breast Programme Clinical Research Fellowship. The successful applicant will be embedded within the Precision Breast Cancer Institute (PBCI, previously the Cambridge Cancer Research Unit) and support the development and delivery of innovative clinical trials in patients with breast cancer, focusing strongly on early breast cancer, and related translational research projects.

The Department of Paediatrics is seeking a Clinical Research Associate with interests in cancer genomics. The Clinical Research Associate will be part of the Department of Paediatrics with close links to paediatric haematology and oncology and the Genomics Laboratory Hub.They will join an enthusiastic and collaborative group studying the clinical utility of whole genome sequencing of childhood neoplasms. They will have an honorary contract with Cambridge University hospitals and will contribute clinically as well as conducting research. The post is funded for 2 years in the first instance.The post-holder will get exposure and training in clinical cancer genomics, including discussion of data, contribution to MDTs, feedback to patients, whilst contributing to the delivery of the service. There will be a variety of opportunities for research with the main deliverable being a study of clinical utility.

We are seeking a Clinical Research Associate wishing to pursue research in the area linking glucose sensor data with insulin pump delivery (closed loop systems) in adults, children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes. The research is funded by the National Institute for Health Research and other funding agencies. Possession of GMC licence to practise is essential. The post would suit a doctor in training at UK FY2 / IMT level or above (or equivalent), wishing to gain experience in clinical and translational research. Postgraduate training in adult endocrinology / diabetes would be desirable for this post, but not essential.
