Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in AI-based formally verified code generation

AI is rapidly becoming the primary author of the world’s software. Today’s models generate code at a speed no human can match — but how can we trust code we did not write ourselves? Formal verification offers a path to mathematically guaranteed correctness, yet combining it with AI-based code generation raises deep and largely unsolved challenges.

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will tackle exactly this question: how to generate code with AI and formally verify that it does what it should. Your work will combine modern AI/LLM-based code generation with formal methods to produce software that is both fast to create and provably trustworthy.

The position is part of SAFIR (Secure AI for Intelligent Resilience and Confidentiality in the Cloud), a EUR 2.5M collaborative project between KTH, Saab, Nvidia, Ericsson, Red Hat, CanaryBit and RISE, building next-generation secure and dependable AI for critical domains such as telecom, defence and cloud. You will join the Machine-Intelligence for Networks and Distributed Systems (MINDS) research group at the Department of Computing and Learning Systems, School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), in an international and dynamic environment with strong academic and industrial collaborations. You will have access to international supercomputing resources and a state-of-the-art in-house lab equipped with NVIDIA H100 and A100 GPUs and ten NVIDIA RTX Pro 6000 GPUs.

Next leap in the battery development is expected to be lithium solid-state batteries (SSB), allowing the replacement of the flammable organic electrolyte in Li-ion batteries with a safer and a more compact solid electrolyte. Within the framework of the Swedish governmental battery initiative COMPEL, aimed to support competence and excellence in battery research and education for the transport sector, KTH join forces with a coordinated initiative on composite SSB with seven postdoctoral positions in several disciplines, focusing on various aspects along the battery value chain, ranging from synthesis, cell assembly, characterization, modeling to scaled-up manufacturing. The 2-year postdoc project Micromechanical modelling and mechanical characterisation of contact, interfaces and fracture in solid-state battery cells is hosted by the Department of Engineering Mechanics (Division of Material and Structural Mechanics) at the School of Engineering Sciences (SCI). In a solid-state cell, mechanics decides whether the cell works: unlike a liquid electrolyte, a solid cell must build and maintain every solid-solid contact under load, while ion insertion and extraction cause swelling and shrinkage and the interfaces between active material, electrolyte and current collector must keep both adhesion and conduction at the low stack pressures of a real application. The project develops a micromechanical modelling framework that resolves the cell at the scale of particles and interfaces and links its mechanical state to its electrochemical performance, representing interface debonding, fracture and particle fragmentation as the mechanisms that reshape the network of conducting contacts. The framework is validated against experimental data from the COMPEL collaboration and delivers a design and operating map, including the safe low-pressure operating window of the cell. The postdoc also contributes mechanical and structural characterisation of materials and cells developed in the other projects.

A central objective is to develop measurement-based methodologies that establish the relationship between manufacturing precision, process capability, and product quality. Precision metrology and inline quality assurance will be used to identify critical process parameters, understand error sources, and define manufacturing tolerances that support robust production. Advanced measurement and non-destructive evaluation techniques, including optical and laser-based metrology, industrial X-ray computed tomography (CT), and ultrasonic sensing, will be used to monitor process stability and detect defects at different stages of manufacturing. The 2-year postdoctoral project Machine Learning-based Electro-Chemo-Mechanical Estimation and Control of Solid-State Batteries will be hosted by the Department of Decision and Control Systems, EECS. The project will focus on the development of reduced-order electro-chemo-mechanical models, state estimation methods and predictive control strategies for solid-state batteries using data from parallel postdoctoral projects within the initiative. The research aims to improve the understanding of how operating conditions, including charging protocols, temperature and mechanical loading, influence battery performance, degradation and lifetime. The work combines physics-based modelling with machine learning for parameter estimation, degradation prediction, and analysis of electrochemical and structural characterization data, including X-ray CT image reconstruction, segmentation and quantitative microstructure analysis, with the long-term goal of enabling health-aware battery management and optimized charging strategies.
