(01) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD Research Fellow in environmental impacts (underwater noise) of floating offshore wind turbines

As offshore wind energy continues to grow as a renewable energy source, it’s essential to understand and address any potential environmental impacts associated with its development. Wind turbines generate underwater noise across various stages of their lifetime, and more specifically during their operation phase. As the rotating mechanical components vibrate, noise can be both generated and transmitted into the water. This project contributes to enabling the green shift transition by offering valuable insights and knowledge to assess and mitigate the impacts of offshore wind farms.

This noise can potentially impact marine ecosystems. Understanding the extent and characteristics of this noise is crucial: (i) to assess its potential effects on marine life, such as marine mammals, fish, and other aquatic organisms; and (ii) to inform strategies for mitigating adverse effects through supporting the sustainable growth of renewable energy, while safeguarding marine ecosystems. The objective of WP3 in the WindSYS project is to create an integrated monitoring system that establishes a comprehensive link between the tower vibrations of the floating wind turbines and the resulting underwater noise. This information helps then to identify the impacts of noise pollution on the behavior, communication, navigation, and overall well-being of marine species in other WPs

Deadline : 7th January 2024

(02) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD Research Fellow in protein molecular modeling

The main aim of this project is to develop a biosensor for detection of environmental pollutants. This biosensor will be based on cellular receptors that recognize and bind to xenobiotic compounds, and has applications towards toxicity testing, environmental monitoring, and surveying of polluted areas. The project will be led by the University of Bergen with NTNU as a research partner, while STIM AS and Biosense Laboratories are industrial partners in the project. The project is funded by the Research Council of Norway as part of the Technological Convergence program.

The work tasks of the PhD fellow will involve genome mining of selected species (fish, mammal, avian, amphibian) for identification and comparison of receptors that bind environmental pollutants (xenosensors), modelling of protein structures and ligand-docking analyses of a selected set of receptors and ligands (pollutants), as well as to conduct molecular dynamics simulations (MD) to characterize the receptor-ligand interactions.

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate who masters relevant techniques on a theoretical as well as practical level. The position will involve some travelling both nationally and internationally, and a short term research stay abroad is an option.

Deadline : 1st January 2024

(03) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: SPhD position (4 years) at the Department of Clinical Medicine

Minimal-change disease (MCD) is a kidney disease that primarily affects glomerular podocytes. MCD represents the most frequent chronic kidney disease (CKD) in children and adolescents. Conventional treatment involves steroids. However, children and adolescents with MCD may be primarily or secondarily resistant to steroids.

(04) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD Research Fellow in stable isotope geochemistry.

Non-traditional stable isotopes provide a promising tool for understanding subsurface processes in seafloor hydrothermal systems. However, interpretations from natural samples are currently hampered by limited knowledge about stable isotope fractionation under hydrothermal conditions. This project aims to study the isotope effects that occur during the leaching and mobilization of metals from host rocks in the reaction zones of hydrothermal systems, using a rock record-based approach. The successful candidate will collect and study samples from hydrothermal alteration zones in ophiolites, determine their Fe and Cu isotopic composition using a multi-collector ICP-MS, and use this to assess the sign and magnitude of isotope fractionation during hydrothermal leaching. The results from this project will be used to re-evaluate recently obtained Fe and Cu isotope data from active seafloor hydrothermal vent fields.

Deadline : 15th December 2023

About University of Bergen, Bergen, Norway- Official Website

The University of Bergen (Norwegian: Universitetet i Bergen, Urban East Norwegian: [ʉnɪvæʂɪˈtèːtə ɪ ˈbæ̀rɡn̩]) is a research-intensive state university located in Bergen, Norway. The university today has over 4,000 employees and 18,000 students. It was established by an act of parliament in 1946 based on several older scientific institutions dating back to 1825, and is Norway’s second oldest university. It is considered one of Norway’s four “established universities” and has faculties and programmes in all the fields of a classical university including fields that are traditionally reserved by law for established universities, including medicine and law. It is also one of Norway’s leading universities in many natural sciences, including marine research and climate research. It is consistently ranked in the top one percentage among the world’s universities, usually among the best 200 universities[2] and among the best 10 or 50 universities worldwide in some fields such as earth and marine sciences. It is part of the Coimbra Group and of the U5 group of Norway’s oldest and highest ranked universities.
