PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher, Political vocabulary of eighteenth-century Britain

How was politics operationalised in the print discourse of eighteenth-century Britain? This project will apply computational methods to traditional historical enquiry, exploring possible parallels and discontinuities within intellectual history. It will draw upon CASCADE expertise in techniques including concept modelling and distributional semantics, and seek to triage problems presented by historical text collections digitised using optical character recognition. The doctoral student should: 1) map the development of political vocabulary in eighteenth-century Britain; 2) lay groundwork for developing a theory of meaning change with respect to the history of ideas. The candidate should have prior knowledge of eighteenth-century Britain. In the project, they will have access to Eighteenth Century Collections Online (ECCO); the English Short Title Catalogue (ESTC); Cand British Library Newspapers and different kinds of text reuse datasets compiled from these datasets.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher, Adapting computational methods to challenges in historical research at scale

Drawing from CASCADE’s expertise in both the conceptual understanding of different types of semantic change, as well as the methods to computationally model such changes, this project will focus on ensuring that the computational approaches measure what they’re supposed to measure. This includes fine-tuning machine-learning methods to capture different types of change, as well as ensuring that the measures derived are robust against external confounders, which may arise either from the data itself or from the uneven performance of the methods themselves. Further, the project involves building adaptable environments which should enable the easy application of these methods to new data and questions. The selected doctoral candidate should have prior knowledge in natural language processing/language technology and/or data science.

(03) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral researcher, Varjosalo laboratory of Molecular Systems Biology / Pathology

The Varjosalo lab has a longstanding interest in the understanding of how key cellular signaling molecules; protein kinases and transcription factors mediate their signaling potential and how the signaling is changed in diseases in the immunology and oncology axis. For this purpose, we have developed experimental and computational methods to identify the protein-interactions formed by these signaling molecules, and established assays to study the activities, substrates and targets for these proteins. Additionally, we employ high-end quantitative mass spectrometry -based proteomics to assess quantitative protein changes, as well as phosphorylation status of the tissues/cells. Furthermore, combining the data from the different sets of ‘omics’ data (proteomics, sequencing, HTS), allows us to generate global and systems level understanding on how disease-causing mutations mediate their effects, also enabling the development of therapeutic or diagnostic approaches.  We are looking for a highly-motivated candidate with a master’s degree in biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, bioinformatics or other relevant fields. We expect the candidate to have practical experience with “wet lab” work and strong interest in the development and application of modern instrumentation. Experience in proteomics is considered an advantage. The candidate should work well in a team as she/he will be integrated into an international research team of experts in system biology. The working language in the group is English.

(04) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher, The Presence of Classics in Early Modern Book History

We invite applications for a dynamic and versatile PhD position titled “The Presence of Classics in Early Modern Book History”. This position is part of a vibrant and multidisciplinary research community focused on applying computational approaches to the study of large early modern data sources (especially British). We are seeking candidates who can, together with us, bridge the gap between humanities and data science and contribute to our exploration of conceptual change, intertextuality, and statistical analysis of knowledge production in history. The aim of this PhD project is to study the reuse of Latin texts in Early Modern England. The Helsinki Computational History Group has used automated methods to detect all the instances of text reuse in the largest collections of printed data for British books (1470–1800, > 250.000 works) available in machine-readable form: Eighteenth Century Collections Online (ECCO), Early English Books Online (EEBO-tcp phase II) and British Library Newspapers. The result is a massive dataset of linked text-reuse fragments, which are qualified, clustered and compared. Based on this dataset, the project will focus on the text reuse of a selected group of Latin scientific authors such as Lucretius, Pliny the Elder, and Vitruvius, and their reception and reuse in Early modern works.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher, Ancient Sources on Matter in Late Medieval Commentaries on Aristotle

We invite applications for a dynamic and versatile PhD position titled “Ancient Sources on Matter in Late Medieval Commentaries on Aristotle”. In the mid-13th century, just after Aristotle’s works on natural philosophy were translated, various conceptions of matter were at play. The ancient commentaries of these works negotiated the epistemic authority of two canonical authors, Plato and Aristotle, in their mutual relation and in relation to interpreters from various philosophical traditions. Medieval views on matter were subject to shifts in the canon, with new authorities being added (the Arabic commentators; scholastic commentators), and shifts in the canonical value of the different authorities (a stronger position of Aristotle to the detriment of Plato). Further canonical shifts are linked to the incorporation of information from source texts in other genres (manuals, compendia, doxography, polemical treatises) into the commentary genre. Although there is a growing literature on medieval theories of matter, there is a need to analyse the presence of ancient sources and their use by late medieval thinkers. The specific objectives of this PhD  project are therefore (1) to map and classify the presence of ancient authorities – Presocratics, Plato, Stoics,  Platonists, Peripatetics, Augustine – and the shifting canons in late medieval commentaries (13th–15th c.) on Aristotle’s Metaphysics and Physics, and their relationship to theories of matter; and (2) to map shifts in the canon in the transmission to different languages and different cultural and ideological contexts by  classifying types of citations and quotations and linguistic and genre-related markers.

About The University of Helsinki, Finland – Official Website

The University of Helsinki  is a university located in Helsinki, Finland since 1829, but founded in the city of Turku (in Swedish Åbo) in 1640 as the Royal Academy of Åbo, at that time part of the Swedish Empire. It is the oldest and largest university in Finland with the widest range of disciplines available. In 2018, around 31,200 students were enrolled in the degree programs of the university spread across 11 faculties and 11 research institutes.

As of 1 August 2005, the university complies with the harmonized structure of the Europe-wide Bologna Process and offers bachelor, master, licenciate, and doctoral degrees. Admission to degree programmes is usually determined by entrance examinations, in the case of bachelor’s degrees, and by prior degree results, in the case of master and postgraduate degrees. Entrance is particularly selective (circa 15% of the yearly applicants are admitted). It has been ranked a top 100 university in the world according to the 2016 ARWU, QS and THE rankings.

The university is bilingual, with teaching by law provided both in Finnish and Swedish. Since Swedish, albeit an official language of Finland, is a minority language, Finnish is by far the dominating language at the university. Teaching in English is extensive throughout the university at master, licentiate, and doctoral levels, making it a de facto third language of instruction.

Remaining true to its traditionally strong Humboldtian ethos, the University of Helsinki places heavy emphasis on high-quality teaching and research of a top international standard. It is a member of various prominent international university networks, such as Europaeum, UNICA, the Utrecht Network, and is a founding member of the League of European Research Universities.
