(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Postdoctoral Research Associate

The Landscape Dynamics Lab specializes in forecasting landscape and environmental change with an emphasis on collaborating with stakeholders to explore what may happen in the future under different scenarios. We turn complex models and simulations into user-friendly discovery tools by developing sophisticated back-end algorithms and interactive front-end dashboards that visualize location data clearly and quickly. Our biological invasion team is coupling landscape forecasts of invasion dynamics with interactive decision analytics to help practitioners compare strategies to control spread. We cultivate an open-source community of users and developers who advance our methods and models and find new applications.
Multiple current projects involve partnering with the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) to build tools to quantify at-risk areas and inform their decisions regarding invasive pest and pathogen management. These and other research collaborations adopt a participatory modeling approach, wherein we work closely with individuals who both affect and are affected by invasive species to co-create data, forecasts, and visualizations that support real-world action.

(06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Research Associate (Theriot Lab)

A Research Associate position is available in Prof. Casey Theriot’s group at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine (NCSU CVM). The successful candidate will work directly with the Principal Investigator (PI) to acquire data and analyze data for manuscripts and grant preparation. Primarily, the candidate will conduct their own research project but also support the work of graduate students and postdocs in the lab.The Theriot laboratory studies how the gut microbiota is able to provide colonization resistance against enteric pathogens, specifically C. difficile. They seek to define the mechanisms that provide protection by looking at the dynamics between the gut microbiota, metabolome, and host using in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo models. This will aid in the design of targeted therapeutics against C. difficile, but more importantly the design of precision probiotics to manipulate the gut microbiota.

(08) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Postdoctoral Research Scholar – PHHI
The Postdoctoral Scientist will assist the Principal Investigator (Dr. Andrew Neilson) in the Plants for Human Health Institute by leading and conducting research, general laboratory management, and mentoring graduate students as appropriate. This will include conducting advanced independent and/or directed research with a focus on the interaction between plant-derived phytochemicals, the human microbiome, and nutrition/health.Major research thrusts will involve 1) how phytochemicals are metabolized into microbial metabolites that may modulate the onset of metabolic syndrome, and 2) how individual genetic differences predict phytochemical efficacy for disease prevention, among others. The majority of work will be performed using 3 key research tools: 1) rodent models of nutrition/disease (including models of genetic diversity), 2) mammalian and/or bacterial cell culture or in vitro fecal fermentations, and 3) instrumental analysis (particularly LC-MS/MS). This will include study design, collection, and analysis of data, ensuring the quality of data, basic statistical analysis, generating tables and figures for presentation (in manuscripts and conference presentations) as it relates to impacts on human health, participation in preparation and submission manuscripts, reports and grant proposals.
