14 Postdoctoral Fellowship at University of Amsterdam, Netherlands

The University of Amsterdam (UvA) and the Bosch Group has opened a new collaborative research lab, Delta Lab 2. We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher in machine learning to be a part of this collaboration. Research topics include (but are not limited to) generative models, uncertainty quantification, AI for Science, and approximate inference. Delta Lab 2 is embedded within the Amsterdam Machine Learning Lab (AMLab) and the Computer Vision Lab (CV), two research groups within the UvA Informatics Institute.

We are interested in both advancing fundamental research and developing concrete applications. As examples, Artificial Intelligence has been applied to automatically detect fraud, support credit decisions and compute insurance risk metrics. In such contexts, anticipating potential harms and benefits of AI applications, while guaranteeing that their outcomes are accurate, fair and do not discriminate based on protected characteristics raises important scientific and implementation challenges. Machine learning algorithms can affect the behavior of agents within networked complex systems in ways often hard to foresee. In this domain, tools typically used in evolutionary biology, population dynamics and network science can be tailored to study individuals’ adaptation that strategically adapt over time.

The project combines elements from graph theory, complex analysis and dynamical systems, and is motivated by problems in computational complexity and statistical physics regarding the location of zeros for graph polynomials. Examples of such graph polynomials include the partition function of the Potts model, the Ising model, the independence polynomial and the chromatic polynomial. Renormalization on recursively defined graphs induces iteration problems for rational maps in one or several complex variables. 

The goal of the project is to develop similar techniques for families of graphs that are not necessarily recursively defined. In recent years it has become apparent that the link between complex analysis, and dynamical systems on the one side and graph theory on the other persists in this more general setting.

Do you like to work in an inter-disciplinary team of communication scientists, social psychologists, and political scientists? Are you eager to employ mixed methods? In this two-year project, we will investigate the role of emotions in climate change conversations. Emotions are theoretically conceptualized and empirically investigated in different ways across academic disciplines. Hence, we adopt an interdisciplinary approach to answer the question: “How do facial, verbal, physical, and experiential emotions in conversations about climate change shape the course of conversations and ultimately shift viewpoints on climate change interventions?”

The Institute for Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC) currently has a vacant Postdoc researcher position as part of the project ‘Unravelling our capacity for music’ (NWO-OC 406.20.CW.002), led by prof. Henkjan Honing. This research project aims to identify the constituent traits of our capacity for music by means of a series of listening experiments in the form of engaging memory-based games.

The ILLC is one of the five Research Schools within the Amsterdam Institute for Humanities Research (AIHR), and aims at bringing together insights from various fields concerned with information and information processing, such as computational linguistics, computer science, cognitive science, music, logic, mathematicians, and philosophy. We are looking for a candidate to fill an open postdoctoral position in our group for a collaborative project with the start-up DENS on photo-electrochemical CO2 conversion. This project is funded by the “Toeslag voor Topconsortia voor Kennis en Innovatie (TKI’s) van het ministerie van Economische Zaken en Klimaat”. The position is fully-funded for 12 months with the start date as soon as possible and at the latest March 1, 2024.

We are looking for a candidate holding a PhD in information law, and who is familiar with the intersection of ethics, human rights, software development or internet infrastructure. We are also willing to consider strong candidates holding a master’s degree in such fields, who have a demonstrable interest in research and in working on a values framework software developers have to consider from the start of the development of applications. The ideal candidate has the capacity to work independently, has excellent oral and written communication skills in English, a creative mind and strong critical and analytical skills. Oral and written communication skills in Dutch are considered an advantage.

Applications are invited for a 2-year postdoc position in the Computational Condensed Matter Physics group of dr. Philippe Corboz at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). The group is part of the Condensed Matter Theory group at the Institute for Theoretical Physics (ITFA) and Institute of Physics (IOP) at the UvA, the Delta Institute of Theoretical Physics (D-ITP), and QuSoft, the Dutch research center for quantum software. The successful applicant will be embedded in a stimulating research environment, including leading groups in condensed matter theory and experiment.

The position is part of the NexGenTeN ERC project which focuses on the development and application of 2D tensor network algorithms for the accurate study of strongly correlated quantum many-body systems. Research areas include the development of 2D tensor network algorithms for ground states, spectral functions, finite temperature simulations, open systems, and multi-scale approaches, with applications in single and multi-band Hubbard models, frustrated magnets, SU(N) systems, open quantum systems, and other strongly correlated systems.

The University of Amsterdam (UvA) is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher in AI for sustainability. AI has a tremendous potential for accelerating the development of sustainable technologies. Realising this potential requires fundamental research to develop new AI methods for the design and modelling of physical systems as well as translational research to adapt inventions to practical use cases.

This work contributes to the European Lighthouse of AI for Sustainability (ELiAS), an EU-funded collaboration between 32 partners in both academia an industry. ELiAS will accelerate the development of AI-driven methods for computational design, data-driven simulations, as well as the development of neural networks for fast approximation of scientific computations (e.g., to accelerate climate simulations). ELiAS will also focus on devising new approaches for reducing the energy requirements of AI systems.
