(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher/Scientist in the field of HiPIMS process development
In this project, we aim to develop new HiPIMS processes for the synthesis of functional, metastable thin films, particularly nitrides. The phase formation during reactive sputter deposition depends on many parameters. Due to the complexity of the pulsed sputtering process, a deep understanding of the physical processes in the deposition system is important. To this end, we will develop models and simulate the process using multi-physics software. The results of these simulations will be validated using state-of-the-art process diagnostics as well as material characterization techniques. The objective is to understand and exploit the synthesis-structure-property relationships in reactive HiPIMS to create new thin film materials with tailored functionality.

(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: PostDoc position in theory and modelling of quantum transport in low-dimensional nanomaterials
We are looking for highly motivated and talented candidates with a strong theoretical background in solid state physics, theoretical quantum physics or atomistic ab initio modelling to take up a challenging PostDoc position in the computational modelling of quantum transport in low-dimensional carbon nanomaterials. In this project, which is closely linked to the experimental activity of several Empa laboratories, density functional theory (DFT), non-equilibrium Green´s functions formalism (NEGF) and dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) are combined to include electronic correlation and screening in transport calculations for molecular junctions and nanodevices.

ICOS-Cities combines and evaluates the most innovative measurement approaches of greenhouse gas emissions in densely populated urban areas. The project supports the European Green Deal and aims at developing unique tools and services for cities in support of their local climate action plans. Zurich is one of the three pilot cities, together with Munich and Paris, and hosts a wealth of measurement technologies and two CO2 monitoring networks. In collaboration with a consortium of 30 European research groups, Empa coordinates the activities in the city of Zurich, runs the sensors and reference instruments, and provides highly resolved atmospheric transport models to the research community.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: 24 month postdoc / scientist position in the field of mid-IR laser absorption spectroscopy
The project aims at the development and field application of a high-precision, miniaturized mid-IR spectrometer based on quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) for the detection of ship emissions aboard UAVs. You will leverage on our previous work for drone based methane measurement to design a multi-species, lightweight spectrometer that can be carried by UAVs to quantify the emissions of large ship engines off-shore and in the harbour. This involves close collaboration with our partners Alpes Lasers, ALTUS LSA and METIS Baltic.

(06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Position on Sustainable Battery Electrode Manufacturing and Characterization using Large-Scale Facilities
The research project focuses on the solvent-free manufacturing of graphite and NMC electrodes to improve the ecological footprint of lithium-ion batteries as well as their structural and (electro-)chemical characterization. The postdoc position is embedded in two collaborative national projects, including a large national initiative to improve the circular economy of electric vehicle batteries, where the postdoc will collaborate with industrial partners from the battery cell manufacturing industry. In the second project, the postdoc will collaborate with project partners at Paul Scherrer Institute developing an operando non-destructive muon spectroscopy technique to map compositional changes within the electrodes during battery dis-/charge cycling and monitor their aging behavior. You will design, conduct and analyze scientific experiments in an international and interdisciplinary environment in collaboration with our external academic and industrial partners.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: 3-year postdoc position on Estimating CO2 emissions of the cities of Paris and Zurich by inverse modelling
The EU project ICOS-Cities PAUL aims to observe and verify greenhouse gas emissions from densely populated urban areas in Europe. It compares available and novel observational strategies in three pilot cities (Paris, Munich, Zurich) and applies atmospheric modelling tools over a wide range of scales.
Our laboratory leads the development of the measurement infrastructure in Zurich, which combines a dense network of low- and mid-cost CO2 sensors with Eddy covariance measurements and a comprehensive network of meteorological observations, including wind Lidars. We combine the observations with two different modelling systems, operating on the mesoscale and the building-resolving scale, to quantify CO2 emissions by inverse modelling.

The “SynFuels” project aims to make an important contribution towards a mobility without fossil fuels. Over the period 2021 to 2023, the two Swiss research institutes PSI and Empa jointly search for practical ways of linking carbon dioxide and hydrogen to form longer-chain molecules and thus produce synthetic fuels. The open position will involve the assessment of the sustainability of the technological developments taking place in the technical work packages by using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). For this, you will further develop the LCA method to improve existing screening and up-scaling options and be involved in Life cycle cost analysis as well as the evaluation & benchmarking against alternative technologies in close collaboration with the scientists from PSI and Empa involved in this project.
