We are seeking a postdoc in biogeochemical modelling to work on the SNF-funded N2O-SSA project:

Combining measurements, modelling and machine learning to improve N2O accounting for sustainable agricultural development in sub-Saharan Africa

The postdoc would be based at ETHZ’s Swiss Data Science Centre, however the primary workplace will the University of Bern.

The postdoc also will collaborate closely with other groups, in particular the Sustainable Agroecosystems Group at ETHZ and as well as the University of Eldoret, Kenya.

As the team lead for this exciting project, you will have the opportunity to work with a group of researchers to investigate the most efficient methods for sensor data fusion, training new algorithms for improving state-of-the-art scene understanding and tracking for accurate navigation in complex scenarios.

You will investigate scene understanding for shared control navigation with a novel personal mobility device developed specifically for close interaction with pedestrians and narrow spaces. Advanced scene understanding from onboard sensing should allow real-time evaluation of the environment for shared control with dynamic obstacle avoidance and planning.

This postdoctoral position would focus on studying shape parametrization, learning gait optimization functions for mechanism design and using different machine learning embeddings (such as GANS, VAEs, and Diffusion Models) for developing a new full pipeline in design.

In the framework of the NCCR Automation, we are seeking a driven postdoctoral candidate to explore the intricacies of traffic control management in contemporary urban environments. The emergence of new transportation modes like car sharing and electric vehicles, alongside the increasingly interconnected transportation network motivate our research. Our objective is to devise innovative interventions, blending soft policies to influence commuters’ behavior and algorithmic solutions for optimal network operation. Our approach is based on a combination of game theoretic and data-driven control schemes. Challenges abound, from modelling human responses and integrating them into our algorithms to efficiently managing large-scale systems in various network conditions and disruptions. As our research progresses, we envision the real-world deployment of our results together with our partners in cities and municipalities to enhance their traffic landscape and sustainably meet their current and future transportation needs.

The candidate will be the project coordinator for a running project about circularity in the building sector with a team of 15 researchers.

The candidate will co-supervise two doctoral students of the Ecological Systems Design Group and collaborate with them on the development of frameworks for assessing circular economy strategies. This will entail utilizing methodologies such as life cycle assessment (LCA), material flow analysis (MFA), and statistical analysis. 

The project will involve high-pressure and high temperature experimental work using a laser-heated or externally-heated diamond anvil cell combined with various laser spectroscopic methods (Raman, Brillouin scattering) and synchrotron X-rays to determine the physical properties of deep planetary materials.

The successful candidate is expected to perform high-pressure and high-temperature experimental research in collaboration with group members, to teach, and to undertake infrastructural tasks. 

The position will be based at the Institute of Geochemistry and Petrology, ETH Zurich (Prof. Motohiko Murakami).

You are responsible to develop protocols and workflows to collect (ultra) long sequencing data from tissue and blood samples. You will be responsible to interact with our sequencing facility to ensure the protocols are robust and sequencing yields are stable. You’ll be able to acces ONT and PacBio technologies to generate data. You will be responsible for the bioinformatic analysis of the generated data.

You are encouraged to make use of the wealth of (epi-)genomic and transcriptomic data we have accumulated over the past years to develop and execute your research ideas. Close interaction with other group members, contributing to other ongoing research projects, and establishing novel collaborations with other scientists are encouraged. We are looking for highly motivated and self-organized individual with a PhD in engineering or in a quantitative discipline (such as applied physics, mathematics, or economics) from an internationally recognized university and an excellent academic track record. Successful candidates have (1) a background in energy system optimization, quantitative modeling, and programming (e.g., Matlab, Python, Julia, GAMS) with a focus on multi-energy systems, sector-coupled energy systems, energy networks, and/or transition pathway models, and (2) a demonstrated knowledge of mixed-integer linear programming solvers (e.g., CPLEX, Gurobi, MOSEK) and of modeling environments (e.g., Yalmip, Pyomo, CVX, CVXPY). Knowledge of uncertainty quantification is a plus.

Zudem wirst du ermitteln, wie sich neue geophysikalische Erkundungsmethoden (z. B. mittels virtual reality) auf das Verständnis und die Akzeptanz von Geothermieprojekten auswirken.

In deiner Rolle bei Seismo@School wirst du gemeinsam mit Expert:innen des SED Unterrichtsmaterialien zum Thema Erdbeben für Kantonsschulen entwickeln, wo sie getestet werden. Du pflegst zudem den Kontakt mit den Schulen, die mit Unterstützung des Projekts einen Erdbebensensor (RaspberryShake) installiert haben.

• Development of theoretical concepts for tools leveraging digital technologies for circular construction, facilitating circular processes along the value chain (identification and categorization of reusable materials, design with reused elements, etc.) in the construction sector

The Post-Doctoral Researcher’s / Senior Assistant’s primary responsibility will be to co-manage the group alongside the Chair holder. This means carrying out world-class research broadly within the Chair’s domain of interest and publishing in the top-tier international venues. As part of this responsibility, the postdoctoral researcher will co-supervise and work closely with PhD students, undergraduate and masters students within the Chair.
