Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Postdoc – Enabling the Prevention of Rebound Effects by Simulation and Design – DTU Construct

If you have a PhD in (1) Design & Innovation, Behavioral Design, Product Design & Development, Sustainable Design, Systems Design, or related areas or (2) modelling and simulation of dynamic systems (i.e., System Dynamics) or related areas and you want to work at the very front of the new scientific revolution within design for sustainability, this is a job for you to thrive. 

At DTU Construct you will break new ground at the absolute forefront for enabling the design of sustainable solutions and be an active part of REBOUNDLESS, a prestigious ERC Consolidator Grant project, awarded by the European Research Council. 

Your main goal will be to drive a paradigm shift in design science to enable the prevention of rebound effects (i.e., unintended consequences of interventions that arise due to behavioral and systemic changes, which undermine ca. 40% of all potential sustainability gains) by design.

(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title: Postdoc in Scientific Computing: Coupling 3D Experimental Movies with Materials Simulations – DTU Construct

During the last 10 years we have developed a hard X-ray microscope at the European Synchrotron Radiation Source (ESRF) that for the first time can visualize how atomic-scale defects, dislocations, self-organise into patterns during plastic deformation of metals. Our aim is to use this advantage to generate a new generation of materials models, that are based on first principles. Coupling the vast 3D experimental movies with the most advanced dislocation dynamics simulations requires novel numerical tools and data science approaches.

Join our center: “The physics of metal plasticity” to help fulfill this vision. Based at the Technical University in Denmark you will be working closely with a leading group in dislocation simulations, Prof. El-Azab at Purdue University, and your experimentally oriented colleagues. You will also be part of a Danish Center-of-Excellence on hard materials in 3D, SOLID, where you will interact with 15 other PhDs and post docs, all exploiting the latest 3D methods based on large scale x-ray and neutron facilities, within a broad range of fields.

(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in Modelling and Optimization of Carbon Capture Processes – DTU Chemical Engineering

This project aims to improve CO2 capture simulation technology by apply state‐of‐the‐art techniques for evaluation of uncertainties in process modelling, experimental data, model parameters and modelling approaches in order to optimize design, analysis and operation of complete capture processes. The goal of the project is to develop accurate, robust software tools to be used in process simulators for standard and novel carbon capture processes. We aim to improve the robustness and efficiency of CO2 capture simulation for classical amine‐based aqueous solvents as well as other solvents such as chilled ammonia, potassium carbonate solutions, demixing (phase‐change) solvents, non‐aqueous solvents, ionic liquids and others. 

The CERE group at DTU Chemical Engineering possesses extensive expertise in both experimental measurement and modelling of phase equilibrium and thermodynamic properties. The project is supported by a consortium of industrial partners, ensuring that the high-level research remains relevant and applicable in real-world contexts.

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc on Fundamental Understanding of Electrolytic H2 Evolution in Alkaline Environment – DTU Energy

We seek a 2-year Postdoc to carry out research on the fundamental understanding of the H2 evolution reaction (HER) on selected catalysts in alkaline environment (AE) by means of detailed electrochemical testing under varying operating conditions and in combination with operando Spectroscopy and Microscopy.

The Section of Low Temperature Electrochemistry at DTU Energy carries out research on electrochemical conversion and storage technologies. Our research spans from fundamental understanding of electrochemical materials and processes to fabrication of lab scale components and devices and testing using advanced electrochemical characterization methods and test stations. We work in close collaboration with other Sections within the Department of Energy Conversion and Storage as well as other Departments at DTU, thereby expanding our capacity for materials processing, microstructural characterization, and modelling.

Electrolysis is a key technology for transitioning to a 100% sustainable energy system, as it both enables cost effective and large-scale storage of intermittent renewable electricity and provides the means to produce sustainable fuels and chemicals. Alkaline electrolysis is the most mature and low cost amongst electrolysis technologies, but requires a boost in efficiency and production rate to further lower the price of hydrogen produced to a level that can compete with fossil fuel derived hydrogen. Understanding and fine-tuning the kinetics for HER in alkaline environment is expected to contribute greatly in this direction, and forms the main goal of this Postdoc project.

DTU Offshore (DOTC) at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) invites applications for a 2-year postdoctoral position in Elasticity modelling starting 1 October 2024.

In the future the focus of the offshore industry will be on safe/reliable continued oil & gas recovery from increasingly lower reservoir quality rock, subsurface CO2 storage, and hydrocarbon field abandonment. For these focus areas it is key to understand the flow potential and the risk of rock failure to access production potential and prevent leakage. 

The group, you will be joining, works on the understanding of the flow potential of low permeability diatomaceous sedimentary rocks with a focus on assessing matrix and fracture permeability from data derived from rock samples and borehole geophysical logging tools. This will lead to a new understanding of how diatomite properties control flow potential. This is relevant for both sealing properties in relation to well abandonment and CO2 storage, as well as evaluation of new hydrocarbon prospects.

Come and be a part of the “Table-Top Synchrotron” project and one of the world’s strongest groups in this field in our quest to develop supercontinuum sources that outcompete synchrotrons from the deep ultraviolet (deep-UV) down to 33 nm to the mid-infrared (mid-IR) up to 15 µm. 

To cover this enormous bandwidth we are developing 4 new all-fiber supercontinuum sources, or beamlines. The UV beamline 1 is based on gas-filled hollow-core silica fibers and meta-surfaces and will cover 33-1100 nm, extending the record 113 nm UV edge to 33 nm. The near-IR beamline 2 is based on solid-core silica photonic crystal fibers covering 400-2400 nm and will use so-called all-normal dispersion (ANDi) fibers pumped with femtosecond lasers to achieve record low noise for spectroscopy and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) imaging applications. The same technology will be used for the low-noise beamline 3 covering 1-5 µm using commercial fluoride fiber. Beamline 4 will push the record IR edge in all-fiber mid-IR supercontinuum sources to 15 µm by using chalcogenide soft-glass fibers, in particular in-house fabricated sulfide, selenide, and telluride fibers.

DTU Aqua is looking for a postdoc to work with development and validation of multi-target high throughput diagnostics of diseases in aquaculture towards implementation as a diagnostic tool. Specifically, the work entails development of a microfluidic chip tool for high throughput qPCR tests. You will take part in the European Partnership on Animal Health and Welfare, which goals are to progress Europe towards healthy and sustainable livestock production systems (for both terrestrial and aquatic animals), including the reduction of anti-microbial usage, improve production animal welfare, and in line with the European Green Deal and farm-to-fork strategy. Your job will be in the Section for Fish- and shellfish diseases at DTU AQUA. We offer state-of-the art laboratory and experimental facilities, where we carry out research on virology, immunology and host-pathogen interactions. At the section for fish- and shellfish diseases, we have more than 30 years of experience with research on fish diseases, and a large international network. The section is the National reference laboratory on fish, crustacean and mollusc diseases, and EU reference laboratory on fish- and crustacean diseases. Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in Simulation and AI in APEX project – Artificial Intelligence for Policy Excellence in the Climate Crisis – DTU Management

We offer a two-year postdoc opportunity in the Artificial Intelligence for Policy Excellence in the Climate Crisis (APEX) project at the Technical University of Denmark, focused on leveraging AI to develop a new generation of Machine Learning (ML)-based approximators to simulators. Your role, starting on July 1, 2024, will center on setting up, calibrating and analysing the pre-existing simulators that will form the workbench for the APEX project. The exact simulation tools to be used will be discussed upon the beginning of the project, and shall include areas such as Transport, Energy and Environment. 

The goal of the APEX project is to develop ML-based automatic approximators to existing simulators, that are able to replicate out-of-distribution performance yet be orders of magnitude faster. To achieve this, several different approaches will be tested, on a collection of simulators with increasing complexity. Ultimately, such simulators can form an integrated assessment model (IAM) that can be used in a reinforcement learning framework.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in Protein Chemistry and Structural Biology – DTU Chemistry

Our research project is at the forefront of understanding the complex role of the 47-residue-long N-terminus in the activation of tryptophan hydroxylase isoform 2 (TPH2). TPH2 is a brain-specific, multiple domain enzyme, acting as the catalyst for the vital and rate-limiting step in serotonin synthesis. However, the structural details of the N-terminus have remained a tantalizing enigma. The N-terminus boasts a pivotal phosphorylation site that, when phosphorylated, initiates binding of 14-3-3 proteins that enhances the activity and stability of phosphorylated TPH2. The mystery deepens, as it appears that the N-terminus might be obstructing the active site. As a postdoctoral researcher on our team, you will play a crucial part in our comprehensive and meticulous investigation. In collaboration with Copenhagen University, you will employ an interdisciplinary approach that leverages expertise in NMR, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and in-silico modeling. By combining these cutting-edge techniques, you will help to reveal the intricate function of the 47-residue N-terminus in the activation of TPH2.

You will work in the field of quantum optical characterization and modeling of sources of single indistinguishable photons based on nanoengineered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and semiconductor InGaAs quantum dots. The position is offered with support from the Villum Fonden.

Novel sources of single photons are expected to play an essential role in various quantum information applications, such as secure communications, quantum computation, and metrology. These applications require deterministic on-demand emission as well as high efficiency, purity, and indistinguishability of the emitted photons. Moreover, a vision within scalable quantum information processing is to develop a fully integrated active photonic circuit on a single chip by implementing the main building blocks, e.g., single-photon sources, beamsplitters, and single-photon detectors. In particular, a novel nanoengineered TMD appears as a promising platform for developing on-chip fully integrated photonic circuits for future quantum technologies.

Electronic quantum devices are conventionally fabricated from semiconductor GaAs/AlGaAs or Si/Ge heterostructures or III-V semiconductor nanostructures. In these materials, transport can generally be understood from a free-electron-gas picture, and electrical devices can be effectively controlled by electrostatic gating at the nanoscale. 

Electron systems in oxide heterostructures are emerging as an exciting alternative class of materials where the free-electron-gas picture starts to break down due to significant electron-electron interaction. On the one hand, complex oxides offer high electron mobilities and gate-tunability, and devices can be fabricated using established semiconductor processing techniques. However, on the other hand, oxide 2DEGs are characterized by a delicate interplay of the spin, charge, and orbital degrees of freedom, and their properties are dominated by effects of strong correlations such as ferroelectricity, magnetism, or intrinsic gate-tunable superconductivity. This opens an exciting possibility to generate new functionalities in electronic quantum devices not possible with conventional semiconductors.

This postdoc position will develop your expertise in the physics and chemistry of polymeric self-organization phenomena. The position at DTU Chemistry is affiliated with the project Packing Frustration in ABC Starblock Polymers and the focus of the project is to study how the detailed structure of the individual blocks A, B and C influence the self-organization behavior. An ABC star block polymer is a material where polymer A, B, and C is connected to a common point. The project involves the study of a carefully chosen selection of ABC-stars. The purity of the stars we investigate is pivotal and thus competences within polymer analysis and in particular chromatography is important. The synthesis of the materials are conducted in collaboration with a PhD-project already affiliated with the project. The properties of the ABC-stars and especially the structures formed will be studied using scattering and imaging techniques. Competences with in electron microscopy, AFM, and small angle scattering is very welcome. We are interested in establishing understanding of the relation between molecular properties – polarity and conformation – and the structures of the bulk ABC-star materials. In the beginning of the post doc the focus will be establishing chromatographic equipment for analysis of the star including option for size exclusion chromatography and chromatography under critical conditions. However, the availability of the ABC stars is also pivotal but as the project moves forward the focus will shift towards the structures formed.
