We are seeking an evolutionary biologist with experience of running large-scale experiments and collecting ecological data in the field. The University of Cambridge wishes to appoint a postdoctoral scientist to join Dr Michal Minczuk’s research group in the MRC Mitochondrial Biology Unit in Cambridge. The postholder will work within a programme focussed on mitochondrial genome editing model and cure mitochondrial diseases. Mammalian mitochondria contain several copies of their own genome (mtDNA) which encodes 13 essential subunits of the oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) system. Pathogenic variants in the mitochondrial genome can result in mitochondrial diseases, which are a major group of inherited conditions affecting ~1 in 8,000 humans. These disorders are currently incurable and effectively untreatable, with heterogeneous penetrance, presentation and prognosis. This project aims at addressing the lack of effective treatment for these disorders.

The positions are part of a recently funded collaborative project to model experimentally and theoretically chronic rhinosinusitis (inflammation of the nose and paranasal sinuses) led by Co-PIs Teuta Pilizota (Edinburgh) and Eric Lauga (Cambridge). The project includes clinicians, physicists, biologists and applied mathematicians, across several departments in both Cambridge and Edinburgh.

The position will focus on the development and implementation of state-of-the-art machine learning and image analysis techniques for the early diagnosis of mental health disorders (e.g. dementia, mood-related disorders). The research aims to develop biologically-inspired artificial systems for precision brain and mental health by bringing together expertise in machine learning, data science, neuroscience, and clinical practice.

We would like to appoint a post-doctoral researcher in computational geophysics at the University of Cambridge for a fixed term of 36 months. The focus of the project is the development of new open-source finite-element code for forward and adjoint modelling of glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) and sea level change. Applications are invited to recruit an enthusiastic post-doctoral scientist to work on a project in the group of Prof Ravi Gupta. We employ an integrated approach, using biochemistry, cell biology, and use of viruses as tools to probe cellular pathways involved in macrophage cell cycle regulation. We are a virology lab and therefore also interested in persistence of viruses in cells such as macrophages. Macrophages are key players in innate and adaptive immunity as well as tissue homeostasis. We discovered that these terminally differentiated cells can transition between cell cycle states without cell division. This is dependent on the canonical proliferation cascade involving MEK/ERK and leads to deactivation of the retroviral restriction factor SAMHD1. We have exciting new data to show that certain physiological triggers such as cell contact can drive this cell cycle progression.

The projects aims to: (1) equip (humanoid) robots with novel socio-emotional intelligence and adaptation capabilities grounded in the state of the art in affective computing, social signal processing, and machine learning fields; and (2) deploy these robots both in lab and in real world settings to enable the human users maintain and improve their health and wellbeing.

Applications are invited for a Research Associate (PostDoc) to work on compilation for extracting program parallelism for novel computer architectures. Our research group has developed a number of approaches for increasing the performance of applications through parallelisation. Building on the success of the HELIX automatic parallelising compiler, and the more recent Janus binary parallelisation framework, we seek to develop compiler analyses and transformations within the LLVM toolset to extract parallelism for future microprocessors. We wish to identify opportunities for task-level parallelism during compilation, extracting parallelism for the most beneficial parts of the code, and dealing with cross-task data dependences via speculation or synchronisation. The successful candidate will develop new analyses and transformations that can realise this system, working closely with a team of PostDocs and PhD students, as well as project partner, Arm.

A position exists, for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Department of Engineering, to work on AI for Digital Manufacturing. The post holder will be located in West Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK. The main responsibility of the post holder is to conduct high-quality research and development in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and its applications to digital manufacturing. This includes designing, implementing, and evaluating novel AI techniques such as machine learning for addressing various challenges and opportunities in digital manufacturing, such as smart design, quality control, predictive maintenance, and process optimization. Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research associate position in the synthesis and photo-physics of lanthanide nanoparticles and organic-lanthanide hybrid systems, in the group of Prof. Akshay Rao at the Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge (https://rao.oe.phy.cam.ac.uk/). You will build on the group’s recent advances in the area of manipulating spin-triplet excitons at the organic-lanthanide nanoparticle interfaces (Han et al., Nature, 2020, DOI: 10.1038/s41586-020-2932-2). We are exploring these systems for a range of applications including photo frequency conversion and NIR optoelectronics.

Applications are invited for a Research Assistant/Research Associate position in the group of Professor Henrik Jönsson at the Sainsbury Laboratory, Cambridge University, to carry out fundamental research in the field of Computational Morphodynamics in plants. The shoot apical meristem is a stem cell niche in plants instructive in determining the development of the above-ground part of the plant. Multiple factors are involved in the regulation of differentiation and growth of the cells in the tissue and computational models are required to quantitatively understand how these factors are integrated. The project will focus on computational modelling of gene regulatory networks, hormone signalling and transport and/or mechanics for predicting tissue shape and dynamics with the aim to better understand the maintenance of the stem cell niche, its plasticity to external cues, and its ability to regenerate. It will include development and use of quantitative analysis tools for 4D microscopy data to be used for model development and validation. The successful applicant should have or build a strong interest in solving problems related to plant development and they will have the opportunity to develop skills in advanced live microscopy and plant and molecular biology techniques.

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in use of optical microscopy to study electrochemical processes in battery electrode materials. You will work between the groups of Prof. Akshay Rao (http://www.rao.oe.phy.cam.ac.uk/) and Prof. Dame Clare Grey (https://www.ch.cam.ac.uk/group/grey/index), and build on our recent advances is developing optical microscopy as a new high-throughput operando characterisation tool to study ion transport, phase transitions and degradation in battery electrodes, both at the single-particle level and also across the electrode [References 1-3].

The Research for Equitable Access and Learning (REAL) Centre in the Faculty of Education at the University of Cambridge wishes to appoint a full-time Research Associate to work with Professor Pauline Rose on a study focused on sustainability of projects associated with the Girls’ Education Challenge (GEC), funded by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. This is being undertaken as part of a series of studies being undertaken by the Independent Evaluation Team, led by Tetra Tech. The postholder will be primarily responsible for supporting the qualitative research needs of the study, including preparing the qualitative and quantitative evaluation design and instruments, coding and analysis, as well as reviewing relevant literature for the preparation of the report. This will involve the oversight of researchers involved in the coding, for example, as well as engaging with team members, implementing partners and FCDO. The postholder will lead the preparation of the writing of the report, under the guidance of Professor Pauline Rose and with the support of other colleagues from the Independent Evaluation team. The High Energy Physics group at the University of Cambridge seeks to appoint two outstanding researchers to join its effort on the LHCb experiment. One full-time-equivalent position is envisaged to work on physics analysis of charmless B decays as part of the ERC-funded KstarKstar project, led by Dr. Matt Kenzie. The other full-time-equivalent position is envisaged to work on detector R&D in the area of CMOS sensor and chip characterisation with a view to the LHCb Upgrade II MightyTracker system, led by Dr. Matt Kenzie and Dr. Paula Alvarez-Cartelle. The person effort of the two successful candidates could be split between the two available posts.

This post will involve conducting innovative research on human memory, contrasting two theories on how memory changes when experiences are traumatic. The primary objective of this position is to devise, implement, conduct, analyse and report experiments to test these cognitive theories on healthy volunteers, as part of an ongoing research programme led by Dr. Deborah Talmi in collaboration with Prof. Richard Henson (MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit, University of Cambridge ) and Prof. Emily Holmes (Uppsala University, Sweden), funded by an ESRC grant.

We are seeking a highly motivated post-doctoral Research Associate to design and perform experiments to decipher the physiological differences between maize and wild barley lines with contrasting photosynthetic properties as discovered by large-scale phenotypic screens as part of the CAPITALISE project. The successful candidate will also present results at consortium meetings and write publications in peer reviewed journals as well as curate and share data and generally liaise with project partners across work packages.
