Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  N.C. PSI Research Fellow

The N.C. PSI Research Fellow in Interdisciplinary Project Coordination and Facilitation will play a central role in supporting the development, coordination, and execution of large interdisciplinary research projects within the N.C. PSI. Working closely with PSI leadership and faculty teams, the fellow will help assemble and support coordination of multi-investigator proposals, coordinate project milestones and reporting, and facilitate collaboration across colleges, centers, and external partners. This position offers an exceptional opportunity to gain hands-on experience in strategic research development and interdisciplinary team management while contributing directly to N.C. PSI’s mission to accelerate discovery and innovation across agriculture and the plant sciences, ultimately driving solutions for growers in North Carolina and beyond.

The Research Fellow will support the development, coordination, and execution of interdisciplinary research initiatives across N.C. PSI. (03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Scholar- Callahan

The postdoctoral scholar will lead components of an NIGMS-funded research program to make the measurement of complex microbial communities (or “microbiomes”) more accurate and quantitative. Three potential research thrusts have already been identified: (1) long-read amplicon sequencing at maximum resolution, (2) correcting and accounting for bias in metagenomic sequencing, and (3) improving interpretation of metaproteomic measurements. Research ideas by the candidate that fit in the broader theme of improving microbiome measurements will also be considered. This research program builds on advances pioneered in the Callahan lab such as the DADA2 software for amplicon denoising, the MWC model for taxonomic bias in metagenomic measurements, and a growing collaboration related to metaproteomics with the Kleiner lab at NC State. Other responsibilities will include participation in regular project meetings with collaborators, presentation of research at conferences and preparation of manuscripts.

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Scholar – PHHI

  • The primary duties of this position will include conducting advanced independent and/or directed research with a focus on the interaction between plant-derived phytochemicals, the human gut microbiome and nutrition/health outcomes. Major research thrusts in the Neilson lab currently involve 1) utilizing phytochemicals to modulate production of gut microbiome-derived uremic toxins such as trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), phenylacetic acid, phenylacetylglutamine, and imidazole propionate, and 2) understanding individual genetic differences predict phytochemical bioavailability, metabolism, and efficacy for disease prevention, among others.
  • The majority of the work will be performed using 4 key research tools: 1) anaerobic fecal fermentations, 2) rodent models of nutrition/disease (including models of genetic variety), 3) mammalian and/or bacterial cell culture, and 4) instrumental analysis (particularly LC-MS/MS). This will include study design, collection and analysis of data, ensuring quality of data, basic statistics analysis, generating tables and figures for presentation (in manuscripts and conference presentations) as it relates to impacts on human health, participation in preparation and submission manuscripts, reports and grant proposals.
  • Other general duties will include general lab and instrument maintenance and management as well as other duties as assigned. In addition to performing assigned experiments, the successful candidate will contribute to the intellectual direction of the lab by identifying important research questions, formulating hypotheses and designing experiments (including adoption of new techniques) to test those hypotheses.
  • The candidate must have a demonstrated ability to work independently and creatively. She/He will provide support to peers, collaborative partners, and students, have good communication skills, and be able to articulate clearly the scientific and technical needs in the field, set clear goals, and work within an interdisciplinary setting.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to develop and submit (with guidance from the Principal Investigator) postdoctoral fellowship applications and other grant applications to sponsors such as USDANIH, etc. The successful candidate is expected to routinely publish their research in relevant peer-reviewed academic journals.

(10) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Scholar – Oncology

The Postdoctoral Research Scholar will work under the direct guidance of Dr. Mike Nolan, a veterinary radiation oncologist whose research includes both comparative oncology and cancer neurosciences. Specifically, the Nolan Lab engages in two types of research:
    • Veterinary Clinical Trials: the purpose is to develop novel therapies for pet dogs and cats with cancer; recent endeavors have included nanoparticle-based therapies, small molecule inhibitors that act as radiosensitizers, and immune checkpoint inhibitors.
  • Laboratory-Based Translational Research: the lab uses conventional animal modeling and benchtop approaches in cell and molecular biology to study both mechanisms of cancer treatment induced pain, and crosstalk between pain signaling pathways and cancer behavior.

The Lab is situated within the Department of Clinical Sciences, at North Carolina State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM). The CVM is a dynamic community whose members are dedicated to preparing veterinarians and veterinary scientists while advancing animal and human health from the cellular level through entire ecosystems.
