Postdoc summary/title: Postdoctoral Associate, Blood Cancer Research
A postdoctoral position is immediately available in the laboratory of Dr. Ken H. Young in the Department of Pathology at Duke University Medical Center and Duke Cancer Institute. The Young lab focuses on clinical and pathologic translational studies in lymphoma and myeloma and has assessed a number of genetic and epigenetic biomarkers for prognostic and therapeutic importance in blood cancer (examples include PMID 34980601, 30745366, 33148342, 31640780, 31127191, 27760757, 23449635, 23982177, 22955915, etc). The current position is to investigate treatment resistance mechanisms and novel therapeutic approaches in lymphoma using molecular and proteomic technologies. We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral candidate with strong background in cellular, molecular and/or immunology for this position. Future promotion is available for those excellent and dedicative individuals.

The Scaglione lab in the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology is looking for a postdoctoral researcher interested in investigating Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). Our goal is to understand how disruptions in protein homeostasis of contribute to AD and to use this knowledge to develop therapies. The Scaglione lab utilizes a wide range of approaches to address our questions. This includes biochemical and genetic techniques utilized in the amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum, human cell culture, and genetically modified mouse models. The initial positions will be for one year with the possibility to renew.

The Heaton Laboratory has an opening for a Postdoctoral Associate at the Duke University School of Medicine. We are seeking a motivated person to take on projects defining host factors that are able to control influenza virus replication, and then determining the mechanisms behind how those factors affect the virus. To address these questions, we will utilize high-throughput genomic screening approaches, primary cell culture systems, and animal models of influenza disease.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE- Molecular Genetics and Microbiology
The David Lab at Duke University (www.ladlab.org) is recruiting a postdoctoral fellow to join a team of scientists developing and using new DNA sequencing tools to study diet and the gut microbiome. We are particularly interested in creating new ways to measure and analyze food intake, which is essential for monitoring and improving human health. We are developing DNA sequencing-based techniques that allow us to track the dietary plant and animal species that people consume. Our techniques allow us to generate objective data on intakes of over 450 plant and animal species that individuals eat and is robust to differences in memory/recall; the output data are also standardized across languages and cultures using the universal language of DNA. We are applying these tools to biospecimens from populations across North Carolina and the world. Data resulting from these studies will allow us to compare our biomarker of diet to traditional surveys of dietary intake, as well as perform systems biological studies of human food intake. The results of our studies will also allow us to create new models of disease risk and examine geographic, cultural, behavioral, and socioeconomic determinants of diet. These projects are funded by awards from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, the National Institutes of Health, the Gerber Foundation, and the Burroughs Wellcome Fund.

(06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE
Postdoctoral position available immediately for research on genome editing in rare genetic diseases. Genome editing with adeno-associated virus vectors is a major focus of the laboratory. The project will include invivo genome editing to treat glycogen storage disease (GSD), either GSD typeIa or Pompe disease. A second focus is to develop small molecules to stimulate autophagy and reverse the abnormalities of autophagy in GSD. New drug therapy for GSD will have implications for the treatment of more common conditions, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and diabetic nephropathy. Representative publications describe the scope of this project.1-6 Duke University features outstanding clinical and scientific resources with opportunities for local and international collaboration. This position will support an active collaboration with established genome editing, autophagy, andvirology research groups. Candidates with molecular biology experience, and familiarity with viral vectors, immunology, and/or biochemistry are encouraged to apply. Ph.D. and/or M.D. required. The position is located in Dwight Koeberl’s laboratory in the Department of Pediatrics and Division of Medical Genetics, and the Molecular Genetics and Microbiology Department at Duke University.

(07) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE
The Surana lab is looking for an energetic and motivated postdoctoral fellow who is interested in elucidating and better understanding causal host–microbiota–immune interactions. The Surana laboratory innovatively integrates gnotobiotic mouse models, microbiology, immunology, and bioinformatics to tackle medically relevant questions. We have recently developed a novel approach of microbe–phenotype triangulation that facilitates the identification of specific bacteria within the microbiota that are causally related to a phenotype of interest (Nature 2017). We interrogate these host–bacterial interactions from both the host (i.e., elucidating the immunological mechanism) and bacterial perspectives (i.e., identifying the necessary bacterial factors). Using our approach of microbe–phenotype triangulation, we identified a new bacterial species, Clostridium immunis, that modulates inflammatory and metabolic phenotypes via regulation of group 3 innate lymphoid cells. Moreover, we have genetically and biochemically characterized the bioactive molecule responsible for these functions. Additional projects focus on two commensal bacteria that protect against enteric infections via induction of host-derived antimicrobial peptides and other commensal bacteria that inhibit HIV pathogenesis. Potential projects include further mechanistic investigations of the above findings. There are also opportunities for translational projects that involve patient samples.
