Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in ERC ViSioN: Virus Spread in Networks
The project “Virus Spread in Networks” (ViSioN) is funded by ERC as an Advanced Grant 2020. ViSioN presents a Network Science view on virus spread in networks, in which the duality between the virus transmission process and the contact graph is key. The devastating Corona crisis reveals two major shortcomings in traditional epidemiology. First, it ignores the human contact graph and implicitly assumes a homogeneous population without specific graph structure. Second, most models for the virus spreading process relate to a Markovian setting, with exponential infection and curing times, leading to an exponential decay of the epidemic. Measurements, however, point to significantly different infection and curing time distributions. In addition, digital technology can help in constructing the contact graph and combined with medical testing, all infected can be detected. ViSioN aims to develop the theory of non-Markovian epidemic process on networks, a surprisingly missing element today, because non-Markovian theory is needed to tell, based on the characteristic infection and curing times of the virus, how long a pandemic will last and when the peak occurs. Next, ViSioN will combine all available measurement technologies to construct the best possible contact graph via temporal networking or adaptive networking. Finally, ViSioN will explore how accurately infections can be predicted under partial information of process and contact graph.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc – How do microalgae grow and move within porous hydrogel environments?
The aim of this project is to exploit the light response of microalgae to provide responsive properties to a microalgae-based living material. To achieve this, the postdoc will investigate how the microalgae C. reinhardtii grows and moves within a porous hydrogel environment and how it responds to light in the context of such a confined environment. The role of specific proteins involved in mechanosensing and in surface adhesion will be examined by visualizing C. reinhardtii motion with time-lapse microscopy. The insights that we will gain on mechanosensing within a porous structure will enable us to better control the algae’s response by, for example, adjusting conditions affecting mechanosensing proteins or using genetic variants with altered mechanosensation.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc on MEMS components for high-resolution electron beam manipulation
The continuous development of advanced electron microscope components (lenses, sources, aberration correctors) have made electron microscopy a key enabling technology for high-resolution inspection in materials and life sciences and in industry. These components however tend to be technologically complex and bulky, making high-resolution microscopes relatively large and expensive. Microfabrication offers a route to shrink the size of these components, potentially leading to drastic reductions in costs and footprint. Moreover, MEMS components can give rise to new functionality such as the MEMS-fabricated hole array that is used to generate multiple beam-lets in our new multi-beam scanning electron microscope (FAST-EM). As a postdoc in this joint project between TU Delft and Thermo Fisher Scientific, you will work to fully unlock the potential of MEMS-components for cheaper and higher resolution electron microscopy. You will design and fabricate new MEMS-based alternatives to standard components such as electrostatic multipoles and lenses. You will study the electron optics perfomance both experimentally and via computer simulations, including study of the interaction of energetic electrons with the micron- and nanoscale patterned features that form the functional units in the MEMS-components

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: PostDoc: Optical Nanoscopy at Cryogenic Temperatures
The researcher will work in a team of experimentalists and theorists who share the common goal to imaging at the nanometer scale. She/he will work as an experimentalist designing and performing experiments with cryo fluorescent microscopy. In order to achieve very high spatial resolutions from single molecule emitters in 3D will be use a so-called 4pi setup with two opposing objectives. In addition the wavefront of the light must not be disturbed by optical aberrations. In reality such aberrations are always present, but only at our targeted high resolution at cryogenic temperatures, do they play a crucial role. Therefore the candidate will incoropate adaptive optics instrumentation and algorithms to measure the wavefront distortion and subsequently correct the distortions.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in I-GNSS
The research project aims to develop reliable centimetre-level interferometric-GNSS (I-GNSS) positioning for assisted and automated driving. To this end we address detection theory for real-time kinematic (RTK) carrier-phase positioning in the context of multi-frequency, multi-constellation GNSS. Statistical hypothesis testing, as well as its performance evaluation, will be set-up as to accommodate multiple competing sources of threats and faults in the measurement system, while taking into account the so-far unrecognized impact statistical testing has on the distribution of the estimator for the position or state. The project comprises theoretical development, implementation, simulation and testing of developments in prototype and practice, as well as design and optimization of the statistical testing procedure.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc positions on semiconductor-superconductor hybrid devices
Our goal is to develop nanoscale devices with topological properties in semiconductor-superconductor hybrid systems. As part of this effort, we have various projects aiming to fabricate, characterize and control spin-orbit interaction and induced superconductivity in these materials. For our experiments we develop new devices and advanced measurement techniques employing quantum dots and superconducting microwave circuits, and develop novel semiconductor-superconductor heterostructures.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Numerical Simulation on Reaction, Microstructure Volume Stability of Novel Cements for Carbon Capture Storage
TU Delft is opening a 2.5 year post-doc position on numerical simulation of novel cement systems during carbon capture and storage (CCS). In this project, a reaction-transport model will be developed to simulate the reaction process and microstructure development of cement systems during CCS, based on kinetics and thermodynamics of chemical reactions. This model will be coupled to a mechanical model, and used to assess the net effect of self-enhancing (Ca2+-leaching) and self-healing mechanisms of cracks exposed to a flow of CO2. Within TU Delft, there will be a close collaboration between this postdoctoral researcher and a postdoctoral researcher working on the effect of thermal cycling on the cement-steel interface of wellbore cement, who will be stationed at the CEG-Geosciences.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-doc on data-guided circular strategies for circular ICT in businesses
In this project, the post doc will be responsible to develop and validate a prototype of a scalable and dynamic circular product passport and a circular resource planner for ICT hardware, using laptops and data servers as the case. The passport should store information for ICT decision-makers, both about the delivered product (static) and about performance during the use phase (dynamic), which is important for maintenance, reuse, refurbishment, and replacement of the product in relation to the required functionalities of and compatibility within the entire IT system in which the hardware runs. The resource planner aims to make the data from the product passport transparent for ICT service providers (suppliers and/or internal service providers) and refurbishers. This system should enable to report and manage on circular KPIs by (a) predicting the necessity and timing of maintenance (condition-based maintenance), refurbishment and upgrading of the ICT hardware at product level; (b) determine the remaining service life of specific components in case of refurbishment, and (c) develop (phased) circular design and replacement strategies at system level.
