A Postdoctoral Research Assistant position is available at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) to work with Dr Nikola Ojkic. The position is funded by a BBSRC project entitled ‘Alteration in bacterial cell envelope structure as the mechanism of antibiotic resistance and cell death’, with a proposed starting date of 1st December 2024.

Antibiotic resistance is a major threat to human health, requiring a better understanding of how antibiotics kill bacterial cells on a single-cell level and how antibiotic-resistant bacteria emerge. This project aims to use imaging, image analysis, mathematical modelling, and stochastic molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the physical mechanism of how antibiotic treatments ultimately lead to bacterial cell death.

The post-holder will join a multidisciplinary, diverse, inclusive team with frequent meetings, interactions, and high-quality mentoring. The post-holder will present data and findings at national and international conferences and scientific meetings. The post-holder will have an opportunity to develop their ideas through various collaborations with different research groups.

Applications are invited for the role of Postdoctoral Research Associate on CanDetect: a multidisciplinary research programme which aims to accelerate the detection of upper gastro-intestinal (UGI) cancers in primary care. The successful candidate will use large longitudinal healthcare datasets, including The Clinical Practice Datalink (CPRD), to develop and validate conventional and machine learning based diagnostic prediction models for cancer. They will be supported by a multidisciplinary team with expertise in general practice, health data science and statistics.

This Postdoctoral Research Associate in Behavioural Science role is part of an exciting strategic development to build world-leading behavioural science research within the Centre for Cancer Screening, Prevention and Early Diagnosis.

The successful candidate will work on a study evaluating the use of population-based genetic testing for the prevention and early detection of cancer (PROTECT-C).

Cardiovascular diseases are the major cause of mortality worldwide, yet there is still a lack of effective treatments. Recent research increasingly emphasised that changes to mechanical sensing, signalling and memory, critically influences the disease onset and progression1. The Iskratsch Group, at the School of Engineering and Materials Science, Queen Mary University of London is exploiting cutting-edge mechanobiological, as well as imaging approaches2-5 with the aim to investigate the role of mechanical sensing and memory in cardiovascular disease. The postholder of this British Heart Foundation funded project will especially investigate cardiomyocyte mechanosensing and mechanical memory through integrin adhesions and the talin adhesome2-5. This will involve the culture of cardiomyocytes on bioengineered surfaces3 and analysis through quantitative microscopy techniques. The postholder will further collaborate with project partners to establish a framework of mechanosensation and mechanical memory at different length scales, from single molecules (Prof Goult, Liverpool) to the tissue scale (Prof Sinha, Cambridge). To reach the collaborative goals, the teams will be in regular contacts for coordination, exchange of data and resources.

Applications are invited for a dynamic Postdoctoral Research Assistant (PDRA) to work at the School of Biological and Behavioural Sciences (SBBS). The research group of Dr Simon Moore is recruiting a BBSRC-funded PDRA position for 31 months, focused on engineering cell-free systems to accelerate the study of antimicrobial resistance. This project is a collaboration with Professor J. Mark Sutton at UKHSA Porton Down.

The position is funded by the Barts Charity and for an initial period of 2 years. The successful candidate will gain access to unrivalled novel pre-existing samples and data to study modelling the influence of aging and cardio-metabolic disease. Their role is to help establish standard operating procedures for advanced single-cell spatial methodologies to identify clinically informative subtypes of cells. The applicant will work as part of a team to produce international quality research publications. In addition to producing novel spatial transcriptomics data, the applicant will benefit from access to a number of existing novel data-sets offering them opportunities for additional self-driven publications and further career development. The project requires the applicant to work on site most days of the week, particularly during the first year.

The School of Geography at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) are seeking to appoint a Post Doctoral Research Associate.

The postholder will play a significant and central role in a new multi-disciplinary project entitled “Pharmaceutical Geographies of Self-Managed Sexual Health.” The project examines treatment communities who self-manage their sexual and reproductive health needs outside of the medical system. It explores how people use digital health technologies and networks to purchase, import and use medicines that are not available in their home countries. It focuses on three types of medicines: antiretrovirals for treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS, sex hormones for self-managed transgender hormone therapy, and abortion pills for medical termination of pregnancy.

The postholder will lead research on sex hormones for self-managed trans hormone therapy. Their responsibilities will include: identifying and recruiting study participants from relevant treatment networks, carrying out interviews and other forms of data collection, contributing to data analysis, publishing research based on the findings and presenting the research at academic and policy events. They will also assist with some administrative tasks like organising research events and reporting to the funder.

We are recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate to study pain in patients with rheumatic disease, as part of the strategic research of Barts BRC. The candidate will be based at the William Harvey Research Institute.

The Cancer Research UK Cancer Prevention Trials Unit (CPTU) specialises in research to advance cancer prevention, early diagnosis and screening.  We perform research on efficacy, cost-effectiveness, and technologies to improve existing and establish new screening programmes. 

This is an exciting role for a behavioural scientist to join The Cancer Research UK & Queen Mary University of London Cancer Prevention Trials Unit (CPTU). The post-holder will contribute to clinical trial design and development of participant facing materials using behavioural science theory to maximise inclusivity and informed recruitment and retention. They will also undertake empirical research on trial participation (e.g. using studies within trials) and support nested behavioural science research in trials. 

To undertake research investigations in collaboration with and under the direct supervision of the principal investigator (PI) advancing Queen Mary’s ‘robotic active capsule endoscopy’ and related research program. You will assist the PI in the preparation for the clinical translation and commercialisation of the developed technologies and will interact with Queen Mary Innovation (QMI), Queen Mary’s technology transfer company. You will also assist the PI in establishing an early cancer diagnosis themed laboratory facility at the National Bowel Research Centre, and will be involved with other relevant research programs, as required. You will support the PI in the administration of the research programme’s and the day to day running of the PI’s laboratory at NBRC.

Essential requirements for this post include a PhD in a cancer-related subject and an undergraduate degree in a biological subject. Significant research laboratory experience in cancer biology, immunology, viral vector production, and animal models is essential. Experience with some or all of the following would be an advantage: gene cloning, Western blotting, FACS, ELISA, CTL assay, IFN-γ ELISPOT assay and in vivo imaging. A demonstrated ability to communicate well, work within a team and maintain good laboratory records are also essential.

The ERC Starting Grant project, “LSIMPACT: Life-like Resilient Materials for Mitigating Liquid-Solid Impact Damage,” aims to understand the effects of high-speed liquid collisions with solid surfaces, such as erosion on wind turbine blades and aircraft components, and cavitation damage on ship propellers. LSIMPACT aims to reveal the mechanisms underlying liquid-solid impact damage using innovative experimental and computational approaches, thereby guiding the development of advanced impact-resistant materials.

The post will collaborate with two postdocs specialising in computational mechanics and materials science and three PhD students. This post will also collaborate with Prof. John Dear (FREng) at Imperial College London and Dr Christopher Braithwaite at University of Cambridge who have extensive experience of liquid-solid impact tests.

There is flexibility in the precise focus and experimental approach, and this will be tailored to fit the interests, skills and training ambitions of the successful applicant.

A variety of methods and skills are suitable for this position and may include those related to molecular biology (cell culture, DNA and protein analyses, fluorescence imaging, redox biochemistry, proteomics, RNA-Seq, CRISPR editing) and physiology (isolated heart perfusion, arterial myography, echocardiography, blood pressure telemetry, electrophysiology). Experience with disease models, such as diabetes, hypertension or other cardiac stress scenarios are also welcomed.
