Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Postdoctoral Research Assistant

A Postdoctoral Research Assistant position is available at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) to work with Dr Nikola Ojkic. The position is funded by a BBSRC project entitled ‘Alteration in bacterial cell envelope structure as the mechanism of antibiotic resistance and cell death’, with a proposed starting date of 1st December 2024.

Antibiotic resistance is a major threat to human health, requiring a better understanding of how antibiotics kill bacterial cells on a single-cell level and how antibiotic-resistant bacteria emerge. This project aims to use imaging, image analysis, mathematical modelling, and stochastic molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the physical mechanism of how antibiotic treatments ultimately lead to bacterial cell death.

The post-holder will join a multidisciplinary, diverse, inclusive team with frequent meetings, interactions, and high-quality mentoring. The post-holder will present data and findings at national and international conferences and scientific meetings. The post-holder will have an opportunity to develop their ideas through various collaborations with different research groups.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Assistant

Cardiovascular diseases are the major cause of mortality worldwide, yet there is still a lack of effective treatments. Recent research increasingly emphasised that changes to mechanical sensing, signalling and memory, critically influences the disease onset and progression1. The Iskratsch Group, at the School of Engineering and Materials Science, Queen Mary University of London is exploiting cutting-edge mechanobiological, as well as imaging approaches2-5 with the aim to investigate the role of mechanical sensing and memory in cardiovascular disease. The postholder of this British Heart Foundation funded project will especially investigate cardiomyocyte mechanosensing and mechanical memory through integrin adhesions and the talin adhesome2-5. This will involve the culture of cardiomyocytes on bioengineered surfaces3 and analysis through quantitative microscopy techniques. The postholder will further collaborate with project partners to establish a framework of mechanosensation and mechanical memory at different length scales, from single molecules (Prof Goult, Liverpool) to the tissue scale (Prof Sinha, Cambridge). To reach the collaborative goals, the teams will be in regular contacts for coordination, exchange of data and resources.

(11) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Assistant

Professor Grigg research group focuses on mechanisms underlying air pollution’s health effects. The Group identified the mechanisms whereby pollutants inhalation increases vulnerability to bacterial/viral infection; how children with asthma and cystic fibrosis are more vulnerable to pollution; and the translocation of inhaled nanoparticles from the lung to distant organs. These studies have informed the public and influenced national policy. The Group leads major trials of new and existing asthma and bronchiolitis therapies and has extensive collaborative links, enabling members to expand their network and skillsets. The PRA will support mechanistic studies using cultured airway cells, extracted human tissue cells, and to develop/support animal studies. There will be opportunities to develop studies and grant applications, examples of studies:

  1. A nationwide collaboration to study pregnancy-specific toxicological responses to airborne materials, air pollution exposure behaviours and linking these to child health outcomes. Current work is generating tissue/blood samples to link modelled pollution exposures effects to real-world findings, aiming to identify surrogate measures of pollutants’ effects for future interventions.
  2. A cross-site study led by the National Preterm Birth Research Centre, investigating air pollution’s effects on preterm labour and neonatal outcomes. Investigating the inflammatory effects of pollutants on placental tissue and cell function.
  3. A paediatric study investigating inhaled pollutants’ effects on airway macrophage handling of invading organisms in cystic fibrosis and bronchiectasis. Techniques used include respiratory sample processing (isolation of different airway cells); microbiological cultures (bacteria, viruses, fungi) with metagenomic/16S amplicon sequencing; flow cytometry and ELISA.
